Scorpio
Hi there, I need a bit of help. Like yourselves, I am a proud owner of a Golf GTI which I bought on the 6th of August 2005 on an 05 plate with 4400 miles on the clock. The mileage that I have clocked up has been mainly from work where I travel to many cities across the UK (fortunately 90% of it has been night driving on the motorway!). I have been very happy with my GTI, especially with the fuel consumption, the drive, handling, reliability, Spec etc... Here are the details of my GTI: Blue Graphite 5doors 30k Miles (Just past it!) 18' 'Monza II' Alloys Multifunction computer, (Highline) Parking sensor (rear) Sunroof - electric glass DVD Navigation/radio system with 6' 1/2" colour screen (removed and refitted with Alpine system) CD-autochanger - 6 disc (removed and refitted with Alpine system) Front centre armrest + rear air vents. Winter pack in conjunction with leather upholstery and gas discharge (xenon) dipped beam headlights - Heated windscreen washer jets and low washer fluid warning light After Fitted AMD Cruise Control Armourfend Full Stone Chip Protection Tracker Monitor And here are the details of my Alpine audio system: Alpine IVA-D300R MOBILE MEDIA STATION/MONITOR Alpine NVE-N099P DVD GPS NAVIGATION SYSTEM Alpine CDA-9835R CD/MP3/WMA - CD RECEIVER Alpine MRD-M501 MONO AMPLIFIER Alpine MRV-F540 4/3/2 CHANNEL POWER AMPLIFIER Alpine SWR-1221 12” SUBWOOFER Alpine SPX-137R COMPONENT 2-WAY SPEAKER SET The dilemma I have is that a close friend of mine (ex Golf GTI MK4 Owner) wants to buy my car as he overheard me saying that I was thinking of changing my GTI as I now prefer the 3dr version. First set of questions are: How much is my car worth bearing in mind the mileage that I have done? How much should I sell the car with all my audio stuff in it? How much should I sell it for if he decides that he just wants the original sat nav back in? The second dilemma I have is, what to replace my GTI with. My first choice is another GTI with a similar spec to mine but with 3doors, colour coded bumpers, maybe a different colour and I may consider the DSG option despite being a manual man. However, As I rack up a lot of miles per year and own a 2nd car (BMW M3). I was considering the Golf GT. I think it looks similar to the GTI (especially if you put some monzas on it). I was thinking of the TSI petrol (168bhp) version. The diesel would be better for my job, but I just cannot handle the diesel clatter (Even though the GTI sounds a little bit like one!) My questions are: Would I be losing a lot of the performance if I was to downgrade to a GT? Could I chip it up to match that of the GTI? Does the DSG perform better than the manual and does it burn more fuel? What other things would I lose changing to a GT? Has anyone on here switched or driven a GTI and a GT? Lastly, What would you do? Thank you in advance if you reply to this…
edo
How much is my car worth bearing in mind the mileage that I have done? How much should I sell the car with all my audio stuff in it? I would say about 19.5k for that spec and age at least. How much should I sell it for if he decides that he just wants the original sat nav back in? I would do this anyhow. Most people prefer stock. Sell the Alpine on ebay or keep it for your next car (and buy without Nav). Would I be losing a lot of the performance if I was to downgrade to a GT? Not hauge anount looking at the figures. Could I chip it up to match that of the GTI? Could be harder given it has a turbo and a supercharger, but no doubt someone will crack it. Does the DSG perform better than the manual and does it burn more fuel? DSG is fantastic, gives quicker acceleration, and if in ""normal" just as good if not better fuel economy.. my 2p What other things would I lose changing to a GT? Handling? Has anyone on here switched or driven a GTI and a GT? Sorry, no. Lastly, What would you do? Depends how much he will pay - could be worth aking whilst prices are strong and there are waiting lists... RedRobin
Scorpio > As you have a Beemer M3, I would be inclined to seriously consider (subject to test drive) a new Golf GT. It doesn't look as sporty or perform quite as well as the GTI but it promises to have a very good balance of performance and mpg. If you didn't have the M3, I'd say it's a no brainer and go for the GTI. You won't get any money back on mods but they are a definite sweetener on a private sale and can make your car very desirable. Jack_is_Back
I would swap it for a GT TDI. Similar performance to the TSI but loads better fuel economy, definitely worth considering as you're doing 30k miles per year.
Richy
Go for the Golf GT TD 170PS I would have gone for this myself as I really like my current diesel car (not much clatter), but I really feel the need to own a GTi! If you do then a wheel upgrade is a must. The R32 ones would go well

Scorpio
Thanks to all that have responded to my post. At the moment my friend and I are almost on agreement to 18k without all the Alpine audio and 20k with. Does this sound good?
edo
Sorry, I mis-read the miles - thought it was still 4400! I think the 16.5-17 is more realistic...

petsy
depending on what it is, it may add no value and in some cases may diminish the car's sellability/value.
Snoopy
Extras little to no value but depends what they are really but not loads more, we have been to see many secondhand year old models with wildly different specs. Theres hundreds in autotrader private and dealers at the moment. My price value range i posted earlier is for average miles a car with 30K (i missed that originally) could be thousands less private maybe round £14.5K. If i was you personally i would bite your mates hand off if hes offerered you 18K theres people on here trying to sell for 17K (with good specs and below av miles ) and getting no interest.
