RB32
For me auto on seems to equal permanently on - anyone got the same problem? Something to sort at a first service maybe but when overtaking with lights on I get more shaky fist w**ker gestures than seems necessary, hurtling along with lights ablaze in daylight seems to wind people up even more than being overtaken generally does these days (I know just turn them off you will all say!) vindaloo
[ QUOTE ] For me auto on seems to equal permanently on - anyone got the same problem? [/ QUOTE ] On Auto setting mine seem to be on permanently regardless of speed. Rather annoying, so just use as manual now.

RedRobin
[ QUOTE ] if set to auto they come on regardlesx of light at 95 ..... [/ QUOTE ] ....We had a thread about this in the GTI forum. This doesn't happen with my GTI and I have specifically tested it. How do I know? - Because my Pioneer SatNav automatically switches its display to Night Mode every single time the car lights come on irrespective of means. I can't see why this should be different on another Mk5 Golf such as the R32.
Cuprabob
Mines also seem to have a mind of their own. Once their on they don't seem to like going off even in bright sunshine
TP27
I've encountered the same problem over the summer and as Red Robin says, I notice it when the Sat-Nav screen suddenly turns dark. It's an immmediate rush to turn the headlights off as they are bright in daylight and are just as bad as the front-fog brigade !!

[/ QUOTE ] Well i might just be the odd one out but on all motorway journeys my lights are permantly on regardless of time of day. My driving instructor gave me the tip when i was learning. The idea being when manouvering lanes at speed a quick glance in the mirrors may not see that car (especially when tired) but if the car has headlights on full then it gives the other motorist a better chance of seeing you before pulling out. It certainly seems sensible to me and something that is now just a habit rather than something that i think about
TP27
On motorways in poor light I may use side-lights or headlights if it's flat light or raining but I never use a full Xenon's on a bright summers day.

To my mind that's the tactic of the "I'm faster than you, just get out of my way road bully" !! [/ QUOTE ] Well i can assure you that has never been my intention when driving or ever will be. I will leave that to chav like people.

[/ QUOTE ] TP Don't know if you've noticed this on the MkV - the leveller system reacts to the amount of daylight - so at say 3pm the lights will be pointing down to only around 2m in front of the car. As dusk arrives they extend to around half their normal distance, then fully once there's not enough light. We spotted this at a recent meet and thought it was a fault, and then realised at the next meet that it's a feature of the lights. Since we worked this out I've not worried about them being too bright during the day - and use them for most Motorway journeys.
RedRobin
God, Richard! Why is it I always seem to agree with you!! What you describe is the reason exactly why you see the lights 'dance' when you unlock your car remotely at night. I always have my dipped Xenons on in traffic if I'm generally travelling faster than the others and also before overtaking more than one vehicle, especially on 2/3-lane roads. It acts as a gentle sweeper and informs others of your faster approach. It's scary how many don't use their rear view mirrors without lights to attract their attention. Some are still dumb but they'll then get a polite flash to main beam and if they still don't move I just hang back and wait - No point stressing. If anyone is having a prob with auto-anything I suggest visiting the dealer under warranty.
R32North
Might be a Xenon thing, as i have auto-lights on the TDI and they only come on when it starts to get dark, raining, or such like.
