MIAMI VICE DONZI VIDEO cool.gifcool.gifcool.gif

Working closely with Universal Pictures and director Michael Mann, Donzi produced a total of seven boats especially for the film, with three of them figuring prominently in the final cut. Donzi’s 38 ZR and 43 ZR high performance boats receive significant screen time, as does a triple-engine 38 ZF center console. Interestingly, the 38 ZF served double-duty, as it was not only featured in the movie, but was also used off-screen as a camera boat.

“The 43 ZR wasn’t in the original scope,” said Stickles, “but when they saw the renderings they wanted to have one. So, Miami Vice got hull #1 – our first-ever 43 ZR.”

Mann eschewed the wild, multicolored graphics common on today’s performance boats, opting for monochrome color schemes and a decidedly automotive feel. The 43 ZR was painted in a specially formulated blue/silver metallic hue called “Miami Ice Blue’. The 38 ZR is solid black. The 38 ZF is also black.

“The boats were essentially stock production boats,” said Stickles, “with custom colors and upholstery, some extra rigging for camera mounts, and provisions for a remote throttle and steering setup for the stunt driver.”
