NickHodgson
A post related to MPG I guess, but I just wondered if I'm getting the best performance and economy out of my car based on the way I'm driving? If I'm working out my MPG correctly ( I don't have DIS), I'm getting approx 42mpg, which doesn't seem that high. I usually get into sixth gear as quickly as possible, keeping the revs to a max of 2,500 to 3,000 (esp when cold). In 30 mph zones I usually drop it down to 5th, otherwise it can be tricky keeping down to the low 30's! I'd be interested to hear your comments, I promise not to get too upset if you tell me I'm driving incorrectly!! By the way, I've done 8,200 miles now, so assume it's run in and everything has loosened up by now?
Redavant
You're driving better than me, I only get 36!
Sponge
I'd say 42mpg for mixed driving is about right - it's what I get. It goes lower for just local type stuff and higher for motorway cruises.
NickHodgson
Cheers for the feedback, good to know. I was a bit disappointed with the economy, but then again it does have the performance so I guess I can't have it both ways! A guy at work was getting terrible economy out of his Alfa so had it chipped and it's about 10mpg better, but I don't fancy getting this done whilst it's still in warranty. My method of driving a diesel... copy the taxi drivers!
Redavant
The best I've ever got was 42mpg on a motorway trip. Then again I drive like I stole it!
Sssline
I also think a lot depends on were you live, hills of say Devon or Wales compared to the relative flats of say Suffolk/Norfolk. I averaged 70mpg on the dis in my old 130 whilst in Suffolk for a week on some journeys
Big_Dan
It sounds about right. We have had a couple of TDi 130s from new and the ecomomy was never better than 45mpg even on a run. Now we have 44k one, it'll do over 50mpg on the same journey.
pitch3110
I drive pretty careful & posted last month regarding my DIS readings & how un reliable they are. Filled up last week DIS was showing an ave since I filled up of 50.8mpg, actural 42.6mpg. Car done 6,000 miles to date & that has been round about the norm. Nelson_R32
Currently getting 44.7mpg but I've been on a trip to France recently where fuel economy wasn't my main concern I was getting 48mpg before then.

eolair
takes a few miles for the engine to loosen up. I've had a few with this engine and at 50k -60k I was getting 45-50 mpg on urban. I've now a a6 on 120k, and it regularly gets over 55mpg.
gizze
[ QUOTE ] Currently getting 44.7mpg but I've been on a trip to France recently where fuel economy wasn't my main concern I was getting 48mpg before then. [/ QUOTE ] My trips to france are where my economy goes up, being a heavier car I guess the steady 120mph on the Autoroute really helps, I get 29mpg at 120mph, however if I drop that to 95mpg I can get 35mpg. Back in the UK it always ends at 26mpg, which isn't too bad as my 2.5tdi A4 avant returned 32mpg over 20k miles and the 1,9tdi A6 returned 31mpg (although I could get 40+ from te A6 if I reset the OBC and really tried). [/ QUOTE ] I reckon it eats far more than an extra 2mpg, when I had my DSG A3 I got 44.5mpg all the time, I would reset it and within half a tank it was back at 44.5mpg, however when I had the tdi Q for 3 days it was showing 38mpg, and if anything I was taking it easier with the manual box round town as I couldn't be bothered to keep changing gear. I think there is at least 5 or 6 mpg in it.
