Dan32
Just been to APS again. Changed the faulty lambda probe in the exhaust (£100 from VW!) and fitted the Milltek hi flo cats. You can see damage in the original ones. Car now runs a lot better, although I did manage 30.8mpg with the EPC light on on the way to APS! Car also louder and quieter. Louder when you accelerate or blip the throttle but its quieter at motorway cruising speeds having taking out a bit of the boominess. Only slight niggle is the rattle coming from what Ed thinks is the heat shield attached to the cats. He said they've only ever seen 1 other do it but its straight forward fix. Oh well, any excuse to go back up there and get them to put on more parts

Dan32
Nathan was saying that the faulty probe allowed more fuel into system which obviously gets very hot and starts to destroy cats. I'm sure that the damage you can see is the same as any other damaged cat I've seen on the web. Lesson to us all to be aware of poor running and bad mpg as this can often be a sign something wrong. Had the probe been replaced quickly enough, the cats would have survived but then I wouldn't have hi flo cats and designated parking spot at APS. Hope to be getting my own monogrammed mug there next!!

khutula
I've seen a thread on here that showed Decked's cats when he had them replaced and they were even worse than this. Edit to include link to other thread

Brisel
Which end of the cats are the images looking at? I will get mine checked out when I get my rear Milltek fitted. How do you know if they are fecked otherwise? When it fails an emissions test during its' MOT or roadside check?
Dan32
Can't remember which end that is although guessing its the manifold end looking back towards the silencer end. I think main way to check for damage is to run diagnostics on the car which will throw up fault codes. I may have damaged the cats over a long period of time with the faults I had. Mook
[ QUOTE ] Which end of the cats are the images looking at? [/ QUOTE ] The end that's been photo'd is the end that connects to the manifold downpipe (i.e. the first part of the cat that gets hit by the exhaust fumes. On the other end there's a two foot(ish) pipe which merges into one to connect to the centre section of the exhaust.
