PhilRS
I am planning to buy an second-hand S8 (the 360 bhp model, not the lambo-derive one), moving up from an '86 4.2 (non-sport). I would very much appreciate your thoughts on (1) what to expect in terms of differences in driving experience, (2) what should I *really* look for in terms of service history, part replacement and so forth when buying second hand and (3) how would you consider (2) in the context of mileage?? I am aware of the timing belt (which needs replacement every multiple of 60,000) and the front suspension bushes (which required almost continuous replacement on my A8--I race during the WE and love to load up the suspension ;-) Thanks for your input, Phil. rothwell
You currently have a 1986 4.2 A8? Any pics?
crasher
If it have full history then mileage should not be an issue - they're built to do plenty (160k - 200k that i know of and there are probably others out there with more on them). If you have a choice then obviously go for the lowest mileage within your budget. I've not driven the 4.2Q, but i'd wager you'll find the suspension firmer on the S8 (unless the bushes and rods are shot ) Check the wheels. I had 18" rims on mine and then upgraded to 20" rims. The ride is far more harsh on the 20"'s, which is bad on the country lanes where i live, but good on the motorways (where i also live ). I thought cambelts were every 80K (tis on mine). If its not had a new waterpump and the mileage is beyond the cambelt cycle then i'd consider that as a target for change (just from experience). Other than that, i guess the usual suspects to check are: brakes, electrics (especially if its loaded with the usual toys), ATF change (others on here will chip in on that subject i'm sure), and oil.
