Why Does My GTI Sound Like A Diesel...

...when pulling away from a standstill?

It's actually really starting to grate on me. My commute to and from work encounters a lot of stop start traffic, and I feel like I'm driving TDI for most of it. I hope this doesn't start to ruin my enjoyment of this car. frown.gif

I'd just turn up the stereo if it was any good.

Tonight is grumpy night. ha.gif

I noticed the same thing when I test drove one. Isn't it an unfortunate side effect of the FSI technology? It seems that the new BMW 335 suffers from the same thing, as that engine is based on the new direct injection engine rather than the 3.0 litre in the 130/330/530/630.

Slightly off topic, but I like the systems that blip the throttle and open up the valves in the exhaust when you start the engine. The 130 has such a system and it puts a smile on your face every time you start it up.

Yes, it's one of the elements in the 'feel good factor', I'm sure the GTI has some of the other elements instead! 169144-ok.gif

I haven't noticed a crackle on the overrun, but you can tell when the valves open up!

The sound (I won't call it noise) of the engine was one of the things that made us go for the 130. My wife called me from her mobile when her brother took her to look at the 130, to tell me that it sounded amazing and she didn't want a diesel anymore! This is from someone who looks at me like I've lost my remaining marbles whenever I drop my window or turn up the TV to listen to a nice engine note.....

Out of interest what fuel do you run it on??? When i first got my GTI it had been run on a diet of 95 ron for 5 months and the first thing i thought was how rough it sounded. After the past 8 months on optimax and v-power it actually idles very quietly. Im sure somewhere in the manual it states that as well as reduced performance, there is more noise when idleing (95)?????

Only thing i notice at low revs is a nice deep thrum from the exhaust. I did notice through the warmer times with the aircon on, the clutch seemed to bite differently when driving in traffic, at that point it would need a bit more revs or it sounded very diesel like (i hated it).

The mrs ka is the same, alot noisier in traffic with the air con on?

I have to say I've not noticed undue noise except whilst the engine is cold. In fact, the 1st day I got it, I took my family for a ride and we got stuck in some traffic around Chichester and we were just sat there idling. My folks were so impressed with how quiet it was they actually though I'd stalled it! I guess it just depends what you're used to...

I'm maybe just being a bit fussy after being spoilt a tad by a BMW straight-six.

....That's exactly what I came from too - A very hard act to follow, sound-wise. I'm serious when I say that it was the first reason why I considered a Milltek exhaust as the Golf cabins are now too well sound-proofed.

My engine is very quiet on initial tickover but I'm afraid that it does sound better on mature Millteks than it did standard on tickover.

I really do detest the noise that diesel engines make!

Still have the BMW 325i but... what exhaust note, what engine sound? Dont get me wrong, the car is beutiful and does its job well, but sunroof open and windows down theres no deep gurgle of hidden power and the engine usually sounds the same as a Holdens.

Should I take the car back to the shop? (or my ears to the doctor)
