just wondering what sort of excess people prefer on their premiums.

on one hand i'm tempted to go with a high excess (£500+) because i want to think that i dont want to crash the car in the year.

or a low excess (<£150) - my mate his has paint stripper poured over his bonnet and he had to get that done on the insurance.

what you would get?

I've always gone with a higher excess only because I've never claimed in almost 17 years of driving, I think you need to look at your own circumstances ie no claims bonus, claim history and also if the extra excess makes a significant difference as it is not always guaranteed too. All I would say is keep away from that company who are getting rid of 4000 uk jobs to create 1500 indian ones. good Luck

High excess for me too, but the poll should be >£250 or <£250.

I would only claim if it was going to cost me more than £500, maybe even a little more, so I can't see the point of having an excess that is any lower than this.

Protected no claims is also a complete waste of time and I will not bother in future.

My policy is nearly 20% higher with protected no claims, if I were to have a claim without having protected on the policy I would loose a years no claims bonus which would only push the policy up by 20% anyway, so I have been paying protected for the last god knows how many years for which amount to the same as me having a claim every other year.

I am paying £605 for my 535d remapped, but as from Feb next year I will take off the protected saving me just over £100 and up my excess from £300 to £500, saving me another £60 odd quid. Although I see policies are going up so I will probably be paying the same! ROLLEY~14.GIF

I've never really given this much thought, mostly on the premise that if the 6 were damaged and the cost of repair was less than £1000 that I'd not be claiming anyway.

In reality, it wouldn't take much to put the bill above that and I'd probably not claim for anything less than £1,500.

My M3's both had £500 Compulsory excesses plus £250 voluntary excesses. The 6 has a £250 Compulsory plus a £250 voluntary.

I guess it depends on the value of the car and the likelihood of the costs of repairs being high for the smallest of incidents.

Ditto MrMe, a repair would definitely have to be in excess of £1K for me to claim, just because of the rise in premuime you would subsequently get, it just isn't worth it below that.

However if I was driving around in a sub £10K valued car I'd reconsider as the premium as a whole would be cheaper linked to the car value therefore a lower excess would be my choice.

Similar to yourself Ashley - I have a £750 excess. When I took the policy out I knew that if I claimed I'd never be able to get insured on the car again. Lifting it to £750 reduced the premium massively. Spent some of the change on an £80 full disklok. Pikeys don't know it has a Cat1 alarm immobiliser, so I thought it wise to add a visual deterent.
