MOSE
Some advice more than anything else guys. In the last two weeks and after several fairly long journeys, I have noticed a very agreesive PINGING noise coming from both tail pipes on the Monaro. This is a completely different type of sound that is expected when they are colling down and retracting. This is a very audible noise almost as if small stones are hitting them. I did post on another site and the only adive I got was that maybe someone was firing an airgun at them!!! HHHmmmmmm. Car is in for a service week after next so will get them to look at it, but this is just to satisfy my own curiosity beforehand!!
P_G
I occasionally get that on mine. Is it toward the tail pipes or just generally? I hear mine generally and was told is is a mixture of condensing gas into liquid hitting the pipes that are so hot they make a pinging. It was descibed far more technically than that but I can't remember the exact phrasing.
MOSE
It sounds as if it is in the tail pipes. But its a very distinctive sound. But I'm wondering why I have not hear it before and why I should suddenly start hearing i now.
P_G
Have you replaced the cats Mose, or just cat back. If the former maybe as your cat wears in, if latter maybe the silencing material. I never used to get this sound when new but once I'd had the system for a few months it happened but nothing to worry about, it doesn't damage the components. MOSE
No still have standard cats.....for the time being. Just to note that from the cats back, there isnt any silencing at all, just hollow pipes all the way through.
P_G
Maybe it is condensing gas in the pipes turning to droplets then?
s4_sat
Possibly water collecting and boiling then turning into vapour.

Lee_
I would be inclinced to say that its just the heat dissipating. When my bike had a catalytic converter in, it used to be do that quite loudly after it had been given a hard time. Either that or quickly check the mounts and joints.
