mooret
Every once in a while a dilemma crops up in your life, here's mine. Grandmother passed away earlier this year and has left me some money. Ever since the R32 left I have been hankering after a plaything for the weekends etc. The wife however want a conservatory! Now these are my choices : 1 Blow the whole lot on an Elise Mk1 or TVR Griffith or S2000 2 Spend 75% on a MX-5 Mk 2 or MR2 3 Spend 20% on an import MX-5 Mk1 The balance of money from options 2 and 3 to go towards the conservatory fund! What would you do?
Drewcam
Number 1 would be very tempting Don't blow the lot though, treat yourself and treat the wife also somehow
NewNiceMrMe
Option 3 As nice as 1 and 2 would be, Option 3 gives you a happy wife, an additional 'room' and additional value to your house as well - and you still get the worlds best roadster to have hood-down blasts in too! The MKI is the original and the best anyway.
EssFour
I assume by plaything you mean something for the track. If that is the case I'd suggest a mk1 mr2. Very tunable cheaply, excellent handling and cheap as chips.

Mrs had a uk mk1 1.6 from new, an outstanding car that was the most fun you can have especially in the wet! It was so well put together, great car
DaddyDub
Go for option 3.The MK1 MX5 is your treat and you can keep the Mrs happy too.
Thorburn
If you get a Mk1 MX-5 just make sure you avoid the 1989 and 1990 1.6's, the engine was revised in 1991 to fix a problem. I quite like the Mk1 MR2 idea too, always liked those and love the one my friend has

I have the 1990, and as mentioned in this thread it has the short nose crank, apparently 1% of these can have probs, but mine is fine with 124k miles on it (and recant laps of Donington and the Nurburgring too). No fun in a straight line, but more fun on the twisties than my mk4 gti by a mile.

cruiser647
With the weather getting colder, MX-5 prices should drop a bit. Wait a while - car prices drop, but with a conservatory your house price/worth will go up! Option 3 is the winner.
