billy2shots
There is a positive review of the new S3 in the November issue of Top Gear. They scored it at 13 out of 20. Praise was given to most things bar the obvious thing, price. They were comparing it to its stable-mate the Golf GTI throughout. I still got the impression they think the GTI is the better car. On the whole a good review for all those potential customers to enjoy.
david_d
13 out of 20? doesn't sound very positive. Got any scans mate?
SamD
[ QUOTE ] 13 out of 20? doesn't sound very positive. Got any scans mate? [/ QUOTE ] Things very rarely get more than 15 in TG magazine for some reason, so 13 out of 20 is not at all bad..
billy2shots
They tend to mark very harshly. They gave the golf GTI 15 out of 20 and it was their car of the year 2005. 15 seems to be a great score so 13 aint bad. Hang on, am i being positive towards the S3? Yes why not, there seem to be a few new S3 slaters around so i think i will look at the positives for a while. No scans, wait and put your hand in your pocket. (Real reason is im crap on a computer. )
Wallachie
Surely it should have been tested against the R32 or 130i?? Bloody journo's! Anyone know if/when Evo/Car will be reviewing it??
billy2shots
I think mags like to do group tests on British roads, so i think mid October/November.
S3Rob
Thanks B2S, I'll take a look at that tomorrow. I know you thought the Autocar one was negative, would you say the TG article is more positive than that one?
billy2shots
Alot more positive, not just for an S3 but 13 is a good score for any car. IIRC the RS4 gets 14 out of 20.
paulyb
Looking at my last Topgear mag the 3.2 S-Line got 12 out of 20 and pretty much the rest of the A3's got 10/20 so it doesn't appear to be too bad.
mark88
Did the review have any new pics?
AZURES3
Baring in mind it probably got marked down 1 or 2 points due to the price and that is not too bad at all, especially compared to the GTI AZ
AZURES3
Just read the article and think it is very positive compared to the other ones, excellent worth a read. AZ
martin275
Did they drive it in the UK?
S3Rob
No it was part of the German launch I beleive. Certainly the photos are of a German plated car. It's funny how some journalists buy into the concept and write the article with a positive bias, whereas other will never forgive it for being a 4-pot. Still, a good positive review. Can't wait to read a few UK road tests.
martin275
A lot of Journos have bias of one sort or another, just the same as we do! We need a proper group test, on decent UK roads carried about by a mag like evo before we'll really know how good (or bad) the S3 is. Most of the good and bad points will be fairly subjective anyway and people will see them differently. e.g. 4 pot engine with loads of low down torque or a silky 6 pot, 4 wheel drive or rear wheel drive, looks (are they subtle or boring), price, Audi image, etc etc What I'm trying to say is, whether you like it or not really depends on what 'floats your boat'.... Mango
To be fair 13 isnt that great. Most cars (including the focus CC) got 13, and the new MX5 hard top got 15. FOr 30k I would want 15+.
S3Rob
I wouldn't worry about it too much chrisY. The CLK63 AMG got 12 out of 20 and I'd have one of those over an S3 every day (obviously)!
Mango
Good point S3Rob, but the Aston got 16 and I would take that over any of them
