Will22
Yes all is fine now with the gearbox. I've seen a 03 black S8 with red leather, I'm in love

colinjc
It looks like I'll be changing my job so will need a comfortable runner for work. How thirsty is the S8? I looked at an A8 a couple of years back and the salesman said that if money was an issue then the 2.8 was bought, if money wasn't an issue then the 4.2 was bought but the 3.7 was very close to the 4.2 for performance but more efficient than the 2.8. Have you driven these cars and is the S8 much quicker?

nikw
Driven sensibly I'd expect an S8 to return 22mpg, an A8 3.7/4.2 24-26mpg and a 2.8 26-28mpg. These figures are for D2s, the previous model to current, and of course are gross generalisations. I think the consensus on here is that the D2 3.7 is a bit pointless in that it's quite a bit slower than the 4.2 but no more economical. Furthermore, unlike the 4.2 not all 3.7s are quattros (and you do want quattro). The S8's economy is probably worse than the plain 4.2 because of the S8's shorter gearing, but the payback is even better acceleration.
edo
For what it is worth, my D3 4.2 Q is retruning just under 23mpg since I bought it. On a long run from collecting the car in Bolton back to surrey, I managed 27.5,and I wasnt doing 70 all the way either...
Atomic
I got an average of 33.3 mpg taking my 2.8 from Essex to Rotherham Sunday And I got 30.1 on the way home
crasher
I'm almost 2-years in on owning my D2 S8. In that time i've put on 60K miles. My lifetime mpg figure reads a healthy 22.4, which i'm very happy with.
colinjc
Thanks guys, I'll see if I can drive all 4 from the 2.8 to the S8 and see which one best suits my pocket. I just wasn't interested in a car that does sub 20mpg. What's the issue with the gearboxs?

colinjc
Eh, here's the obvious question, why 4 gearboxes? Are they crap or have you killed them? Saying that, even if you thrash it you still shouldn't have killed 4 of them.

[/ QUOTE ] No the problem was with the first box that AmD fecked up and replaced with new one that was feck but the muppets that fitted it, next one had a problem from start and then the Audi dealers that fitted the last one replaced it with another one. They have a 2 year warranty so I'm covered for the next 2 years.
