Feck!! Haldex Unit Failing!!!!

Well this is not good frown.gif was at APS saturday having my v3's tweeked and ask them to inspect/look at the haldex unit cos lately the car feels like its been dragging the rear wheels and occasionly i've been getting a grinding noise coming from the rear of the car crazy.gif

On inspection i have excessive amounts of oil coming out of the haldex breather system, and i was told this is the first sign of the unit failing. This would be happening as the clutch would be slipping hence why throwing out excessive amounts of oil. mad.gif

I was also told that these units do fail and they said they have changed a few in the S3's etc, but the bad news is it has to be a whole unit change as you can't just replace parts.

Even more bad news is that it all costs 3.5k and my warrenty is out or is out at the end of the month but she is booked in for this week to be looked at.

Has anyone had this problem?? Did Woppum have a failed unit?? Are they likely to blame the problem on the suspension, and does anyone have a unit going on the cheap grin.gif

If the Haldex oil has been recently changed they do leak oil for a bit if it has been over filled. Mine did for several months.

Yes, somebody did have one fail. I seem to remember at the time Mook had a spare one, but the person in question got a new one because it was a company car. Maybe Mook still has it?

Mine failed too. It was making a whining noise while engine braking (more so when warm and if the engine was at about 4k RPM). The noise went away as soon as the accelerator was touched. I took it to one dealer who said they wouldn't do it under warranty because I had a Carbonio CAI/Milltek fitted! Ended up moving all my servicing needs to another dealer who did do the work.

At the time (26/02/2006) Mook said:

I have a brand new R32 diff in (of all places) the office, still in its original VW wooden box. No, it won't be £3.5K, but equally it won't be £350!

Good luck 169144-ok.gif

The car is at 36k and no it hasn't had a oil change recently, they did say they do leak abit but this is excessive, plus i have a grinding noise everynow and again and the dead weight pull in the rear crazy.gif

And i've only got till the end of the month until the warrenty is up tho i have just logged the problem with VWUK aswell.

Erm, I had the Haldex controller fail on my S3. I also had a Lateral acceleration sensor go and I remember the total bill being £1,400 (including the sensor, which you won't need). There was also goodwill to consider, so I ended up paying £700 and something 169144-ok.gif

I'm not sure what the talk of the diff is, but it was definitely just the haldex controller that needed changing on mine...

The bit that looks like this:

haldexs.jpg

Which, incidentally, is the Hadex Performance Controller, which, by all accounts you should be taking advantage of this situation and fitting 169144-ok.gif

My symptoms were an ESP light (from the sensor) but which led me to VAG-COM the car. This then found countless non-communication faults which were due to the Haldex controller being dead. I can't remember the exact codes, but it read like the whole car had stopped talking to its various parts.

I obviously had no ESP (sensor) so there was lots of torque steer and it probably (IIRC) felt a bit odd at the back. I noticed something wasn't right most when slowly maneouvering (i.e. in and out of my parking space) - there would be a noticable "clunk" from the drivetrain.

Get it looked at properly 169144-ok.gif

Cheers Mollox 169144-ok.gif

I have been getting a nasty "clunk" when turning right quite harshly, plus the grinding noise and the car feels like its dragging the rear wheels. Something is really not right somewhere, and i will make sure they give it a good going over. I'm fairly certain its fecked UHOH7.GIF

The other issue Jimmy is, regardless of whether it's in warraty by a month or not, the VW garage is probably well within its rights to not replace it under warranty as the engine has been modified, hence more torque is being chucked at the rear, so they will more than likely say no.

Getting the Haldex PPP is a good idea anyway. IIRC, it was the second mod I did after having the first set of engine mods done.

Talk to Ed at APS (seeing as you go there so much!). Should be about £500 + fitting.

Read RebRobins comments in his post about ABT and warranty - makes very interesting reading, should help you with any warranty claims and mods 169144-ok.gif
