GTiCrow
Just had the first service of my 06 MkV GTi (in Adelaide) and when I went to pick up the car, they said they had to finish of the pre-delivery things that the dealer (in Melbourne) where I bought it had not done - suspension chocks were still in and some other minor stuff. I've just driven nearly 11,000km with the chocks in - not happy about this. How can a dealer not remove them - surely they a have checklist they have to go through and some form of quality control checking afterwards. Question is - apart from firming up the ride, would that have done any damage? As a matter of interest I have read quite a bit about incorrect speed readings in GTi's, so I got them to check mine. At 60km it shows 56km - considering the tyes have nearly 11,000km on them, I guess I am comfortable with that.
mikemod
[ QUOTE ] suspension chocks were still in [/ QUOTE ] OMFG How could they miss that one... Not sure if any damage would have been done as I am not sure how they fit in. I take it the car is handling a lot better
nhs
Previous posts on TSN suggest that leaving the suspension chocks in is a common PDI error of omission (not just on VWs). On a car with firm ride like the GTI, you'll get a firm ride, so may not notice. If you had a limo (Phaeton etc) then you'd expect an armchair ride, not a firm ride and most people would seek assistance soon after delivery. The suspension chocks are put in to prevent oscillation of vehicles in tranport - for example if a transporter went over a bump, then all the cars on it could go up and down and risk destabilising the transporter well after it has passed the bump itself. There will be a potential harmonic frequency at which this might occur in a major way, such as over a rippled road or over repeated bumps, and this could be sufficient to cause a loss of control under rare circumstances - driver error precipated by unusual vehicle movement. So chocks are put in which very much reduce, but don't entirely eliminate movement. Shouldn't be a damage issue under normal driving conditions, but not something that will leave any purchaser impressed with the PDI It would be interesting to know if your ride is softer after their removal and whether the car is softer on corners than without them? As you may be aware some suspension modifications are in effect to stiffen ride, so it would be interesting to know if your softer ride is as good as without
GTiCrow
[ QUOTE ] [i take it the car is handling a lot better [/ QUOTE ] Have only managed small ks in peak traffic so far since picking up early today. Will give it a run on the weekend for a check out. Service man believes ride will be slightly softer.

Will find out soon on ride softness. Whether it is better or not will tell over time, although wife will probably appreciate more than me a softer ride. Anyway the ride was quite good, I thought, and certainly softer than my WRX I had previously - which my wife hated the ride of.
