Markpaq
Hi, Might seem like a daft question but I've never owned an Avant before. Does anyone know if my new car is going to have a "Shark Fin" aerial or not? I haven't ordered SatNav but I have ordered the GSM Prep for the Front Armrest so I wondered if I'll have the roofmount aerial. Thanks.
P_G
I don't think so, most of the aerials from reading previous posts are either in the rear window panes or mounted under the passenger dash as is the case for the RNS-E antenna. CraigyB would be the best person to ask.

PetrolDave
[ QUOTE ] mounted under the passenger dash as is the case for the RNS-E antenna. [/ QUOTE ] That's only when we retrofit the RNS-E. In the UK you get the sharkfin/submarine antenna when you order either the GSM Prep or the RNS-E. In the US you always get the sharkfin/submarine antenna because US cars are pre-wired for satellite radio (XM or Sirius). The AM/FM/TV (analogue only on an A4, so not much use) antennas are in the glass (rear and sides).

ianncampbell
So are the elements in the side glass of Avants aerials, heating or both? They don't seem to have much effect on demisting.

TDiAvant
the Aerial's are located on the side windows the old model only had 1 but the later models are on both sides
PetrolDave
[ QUOTE ] the Aerial's are located on the side windows the old model only had 1 but the later models are on both sides [/ QUOTE ] Those are AM and FM (and TV) aerials - not GPS. GPS and phone aerials are in the sharkfin on an Avant. That's why my RS4 Avant doesn't have a sharkfin - I didn't order either sat nav or phone options from the factory. I fitted them myself. [/ QUOTE ] Well mine is defo in the rear window sitting on top of the rear air vents, but i also have the shark fin. Since buying the car i have always thought that the RNS-D was a retro fit due to the GPS sitting in the rear window and also having the wire going to the GPS running round the top of the dash then down the side of the car. As previously mentioned car phone is via Nokia 610 which again was an after fit - maybe the shark fin was added when the Nokia car kit was put in - unless what i think is the GPS in rear window is the Nokia antenna - will take i piccy and post it up later. brownswood
hi i have the shark fin aerial because i have the GSM phone option - i am thinking about upgrading to RNS-E does this mean that even though i am retrofitting the satnav the antenna and wiring is already in place in the sharkfin? cheers
TDiAvant
Unlikely, the GSM receiver is a separate module which bolts onto the shark fin

[/ QUOTE ] IMHO that's definitely NOT an OE fit - the GPS wire running visibly around the dash kinda proves it. My 2003 S4 Avant (Nogaro Blue like yours) had a factory fitted RNS-D (no phone) and had the sharkfin for the GPS antenna. It sounds like whoever fitted the RNS-D to your car used the GPS antenna from the saloon - that DOES fit in the black band at the top of the rear window. spikeyboy
Had another look tonight - defo the GPS antenna as it says GPS antenna on the back of it So i wonder why i have the shark fin - retro fit RNS-D and no phone prep except a retro fit Nokia
PetrolDave
[ QUOTE ] Had another look tonight - defo the GPS antenna as it says GPS antenna on the back of it [/ QUOTE ] As I posted earlier - whoever did the retrofit of your RNS-D fitted the GPS antenna from the saloon (it's not the right part for the Avant - but it works). Maybe they didn't fancy drilling the hole in the roof for the sharkfin? [ QUOTE ] So i wonder why i have the shark fin - retro fit RNS-D and no phone prep except a retro fit Nokia 610 [/ QUOTE ] Whoever retrofitted the phone carkit, WAS happy drilling the hole in the roof for the sharkfin. If you look around you should find the GPS connector below the sharkfin, so you could do the GPS connection properly?
spikeyboy
Thanks - guess that makes sense Where exactly would i need to look on the Shark Fin for the GPS connector ? Would i need to remove the head lining in the car ? also guess i would need to run a new wire from the RNS-D to Shark Fin for the GPS ?
