Sparky
I've been asked if when you swap out the hard disk from your Sky+ and drop in a larger one, can you copy the contents from one disk to the new one via your PC before installing it? rottenbend
Yes you can. I've forgotten the name of the utility but you can even keep the stuff in your planner etc. avforums.com has some threads on the subject, including stikcing a 750GB drive in the Sky+ HD box. Big_Dan
The Digital Spy forums have a lot of info too.
Atomic
One thing that's worth noting with the disk upgrade is the Sky+ boxes are very sensative to the disk spin up time. As a result most of the upgrades use the older 5400rpm drives.
Sparky
Oh right. I was told to use Samsung Spinpoint or something, as they are apparently the best ones for Sky+. Are the disks in the Sky box all 5400?
Markpaq
Have a look at this page, It's quite a painless process. I did mine a year or so ago and replaced the standard 40Gb with a 250Gb IBM. It works a treat and gives absolutely loads of space. AFAIK you can't go any higher than 250Gb with a standard Sky+ but the HD ones will go up to 500Gb. Remember that you will invalidate the warranty though so as long as it's more than 12 months old give it a go.
Big_Dan
It's actually easier to do than it looks. I have a 250gb Maxtor and that's plenty It's a 5400, but there is a list of tried and tested 7200 disks on DigitalSpy.
Booster
Can someone tell me how easy is easy please? I know there are links on the other forums but can someone tell me in laymans terms how to do this? We have one of the first boxes with 20 hours recording time. Its constantly got around 15% remaining and I'd like to increase it but (tempting fate here ) our box has been really reliable and I don't want to bugger it up with my sweaty mitts! Sparky
It's easy to do, but do you want to keep what's on the original hard disk or start fresh? If starting fresh: Open box. Remove power and data cable from hard disk drop in new hard disk, apply power and data cables. Turn on Sky+, got service menu and prepare disk. Job done. Booster
Nice one! What disk to give around 50 hours say?
Markpaq
Don't bother with 50! Just get a 250Gb drive, they're cheap as chips nowadays and you'll end up with about 125 hours of storage.
MattS3
Sorry to jump in on thread, but where could I buy an uprated hard drive such as a 250gb 5400rpm as suggested ? The instructions sound dead easy on the bottom of page 1, so I just need to find the right hardware to plug in many thanks
Sparky
Anywhere mate. Some places are better, such as Dabs (www.dabs.com) as they package the drives very well. Some other places are cheap (www.ebuyer.com) but they'll just chuck it in a jiffy bag.

A friend of mine has chucked a 250GB drive in and was showing me not so long ago that he had over 19 pages of recorded programmes yet to watch!
