Ari
Do you guys not find you get tyre roar at speed with your 18 inch wheels? I've borrowed a couple of cars with 18's and each time I've been aware of increased road noise at speed. Would put me off having S-line spec I think, but I am very sensative to road noise ever since having a Honda Prelude in which the road roar was so terrible that you could open the sunroof at 80mph and it would make zero difference to how noisy the car was inside. All from road roar. Appreciate Audi's are much better insulated (the Honda only had 15 inch wheels FFS!) but I've driven a couple of 18 equipped Audi's (an A6 old shape and an A3) and I was aware of road noise that I'd rather was more muted. Phantom
Hi Ari, I personally have not found any difference in road noise between my new cab and the old sport cab. Also it is worth pointing out that the ride 'quality' is also good and hardly distinguishable with my old cab. I guess the tyre tread pattern / compound will also make a difference in noise levels. I think it depends what you are use to, how 'tuned in' your ears are as most people will pick up on entirely different things and blank out other things such as road noise. Do I detect a possible SLine upgrade coming in the very near future , go for it you won't regret it, to clear away the doubts simply arrange a test drive We could do with a few more phantom black cabs in the fold, I understand Moro is becomming less popular these days
UBM
No - and I've had plenty of different cars to gather the data!
kite
I find 18s with F1's a bit more noisy than the 17's with dunlops but its hardly noticable over the clatter of a smoker
Tizzy
Lots of tyre noise (surface dependant) with the S4's 18's. Tyres make a difference - the Conti's are noisier than the GSD3 Goodyears for instance. Car feels much more planted than A4's with smaller wheel / tyre combo's though, so it's an acceptable tradeoff. I do agree though, if it come to it a test drive is the answer. As to colour, if I were changing I think I'd be very tempted by Phantom Black, I really liked yours at the meet. I was also looking at a VW Eos at the weekend (not to buy, therer was one in the car park where I was parked and it was the first I'd seen so had a peek through the window) and it had gorgeous wine red leather upholstery. I reckon that with the black would look awesome. Maybe in 12 months...

[/ QUOTE ] Tha answer is simple, a Millteked V8 would sort out road noise in an instant, you wouldn't hear or care about it anymore! However if that is too expensive an option I would agree that F1 GSD3's are better tyres than Conti's regarding road noise and I'm sure there are even better still out there. I have GSD3 shod19s and road noise is negligable.
Cupramax
I've run mine on the 17" dual 5 spoke B7 sport wheels and some 18" RS4 replicas. I really cant tell the difference with mine. Its now back on the standard wheels for the winter as I cant be arsed spending every spare minute cleaning the RS4's
Ari
That's interesting. Perhaps one day you'd be kind enough to put 17's on one side and 18's on the other for a proper back to back comparison?
Cupramax
Lol, or side to side as the case may be...
Chrisg
My S Line quattro came with Rossos. At 18700 i replaced with Toyo T1R and these are much quieter than the Pirelli. They were also quieter on the B5 we have, SO3s were on that but only 17".
ianncampbell
The 18" wheels are not noisy. There was more noise on my B6 with smaller wheels.
SPLiiX
Agree with Ari! Lots of tyre noise but I like it to a certain extent in that you know what the tryes are doing and dont just give you a better feel on the road but the sound adds to the "feel" of the car especially when cornering to the limit. What a load of bullocks I speak! At least I wont be able to tell when a wheel bearing goes!!
