Speedywheels
Full lock, low speed (normally when manoeuvring into the garage), the power steering moans and groans very loudly. Do they 'all do that' or is it a trip to the dealer
RB32
I gather it's a common problem - they changed the mountings on front suspension for mine under warranty which has all but completely cured it, at least I dont notice it anymore and with heavy fronted cars on big surface area tyres I would expect some sort of mechanical noise as it hauls itself around (eg my disco 3). so one for your dealer im afraid. robs1977
Sounds like the common fault with steering rack which affected A3,Golf,Touran,Octavia and others up to 2006 until they modified the racks.

[/ QUOTE ] Mine's only 2 months old, with an enormous 650 miles on the clock. Have to say I'm tempted to live with it until something 'breaks' - keeps the dealers sticky mitts off it. [/ QUOTE ] Similar thoughts here. Done 2k miles (although only noticed the noise about 500 miles ago), but have put off getting it looked at as I'm concerned the dealer will damage my alloys. I thought of the steering rack problems that have been mentioned by others here but thought it had been dealt with by September when I got my car. Thinking back, my car was actually manufactured in June 06 - does anyone know if the steering rack issue was still around at this time?
TwoSheds
IIRC the modified rack was supposed to be used in production from some date in January 2006.
Speedywheels
I've done a little more investigation - groaning only appears with hard right lock, turning left appears to be groan free
wytco0
Groaning on hard lock seems to happen on a lot of cars, My Audi A6 and my old Porsche 944S do it as well. I just dont go to hard lock ;-)
mike16v
AFAIK there is no power steering pump on a 2006 R32. Mine has a groaning/whining which started on full right lock. Took it to dealer here, and they never heard any noise. Took it back to them a 2nd time, and I took them out in it, and they heard it then. No idea what it is though. I now have it on left turn and right turn, but no need for much lock at all now. I noticed it when going round roundabouts or turning into the garage (ie going slowly) and have realised that applying the brakes slightly makes the noise louder. Dealer has told me that there is nothing lose on the brakes or steering, so it is not unsafe, so fine to drive until they find out from VW Germany what the problem is... great.
