Garmin 310 or Tom Tom 510

Hi

Need some advice on which Sat Nav to recommend to a friend to buy for Xmas present?

They both offer Hands free calling via bluetooth, speed camera - alerts

Their budget is up to £280.

I have no knowledge of Sat Nav - is there an annual charge/subscription to update these products with latest maps/etc

any help appreciated
