steelwind101
I always suggest people check out surveys before they buy there new cars to check for reliability. Its important to remeber what the infomation acutally shows though. This survey says they looked 1m cars, how many were included?? How many miles?? How old?? What kinda ownership?? There are many companies specifing that kinda data at the moment and it seems like one of three cars always top the bill depending on what which one you read!! Accord, IS series or Honda Jazz!! Geoff PS. Does it mean all new models?? Data i have had eyes to suggest that the previous shape Passat was a poor performer in terms or reliability on 5yr sub 100K Mi. Tizzy
Sadly the A4 (and the A3 come to that) have never been much above the Average rating for reliability in the Which? surveys and What Car ones over the last few years. Whilst I think on the whole Audi's are pretty good, I still think the Japanese makes are probably slightly better. That said the percentage differences in these surveys are now very small, even an average car is probably 85% or above.
eolair
there's probably a difference too cos of population - this survey was for fleets - so you're looking at cars that are usually doing high high motorway miles, less than three years' old, are maintained to schedule and generally are not abused. In contrast to Warranty Direct's cars which are by definition older than three years or more than 60k miles, and privately owned. I think this shows that the bathtub* curve is alot longer than 3 years for jap cars, and just on the dot for european cars. * not plumbing related
Torino101
What about the S2000? I thought this was always up at the top of these lists? Or is it considered a bit too low volume for this?
steelwind101
Torino!! I knew there was one i left off at early hour this morning. I know as its fleet they probably dont count the S2000, i cant see there being enough to meet the min. requirements. But yes, i think its topped several surveys. P_G
It's always been top of the JD Power Survey which appears to have the biggest response of all the surveys going but that survey takes into account other characteristics including cost of ownership, handling, performance. In terms f reliabiluty as a manufacturer Mazda, Lexus, Subaru are always high up but Jag, Audi etc are creeping up.
jimdiesel
I thought the S2000 showing in the JD power survey was mainly down to all the S2K forum members getting together to submit very positive questionares. (not that the S2000 isnt a great car, but I believe the results were massaged alittle). Speaking of the JD power survey, whos results are now published in WhatCar. I have always been sceptical of the results as alot of it is to do with perception and expectation, rather than true preformance. for example a typical Toyota Corrola owner will have far less of an expectation of their car, than a 5 series owner. This was confirmed when the last results were published in WhatCar. The Honda Jazz came top (or very near the top), and fine car it is. However the little owners story they included said it all. The guy they interviewed said his Jazz was the best thing he had ever owned. However at the end of the piece, it said that the Jazz owner had bought his Jazz new and it was his first car purchase in 14 years. His previous car had been an Austin Allegro. No wonder he rated his Jazz so highly. Its all down to expectation.
P_G
True Jim, and the number of respondents. If there are only two Maybach owners that respond for example purposes only and one slates it and the other thinks its good but not brilliant, the Maybach gets a poor result. The fact it is an overpriced moving house is nothing to do with it of course...
cruiser647
I ignore these survey results anyway. And always will.
