a6 breakdown help!!!!!

hi there,i was out tonight and my A6 2.5 tdi(98 v6) just cut out and now wont start,i called the AA and the guy came out,i was sweating that it might be my cambelt even tho its not due a change for 20k,the AA guy checks the car and tells me its not the cambelt but whilst shining a torch under the bonnet and me turning the key he tels me the fuel filter isnt getting any fuel so says its my fuel pump.

question is "is it possible to tell if the fuel filter is getting fuel from looking under the bonnet" and "is it possible it could be something else connected to the fuel pump like a fuse or a relay",im really no wiser and dont know where to start looking tomorrow.

any help would be appreciated.
