Temperature Gauge - A4 2003

My temperature gauge has finally stopped working. Is it a big job (and expensive) to get it fixed? Could it just be the sender unit etc.? (Fluids are fine)

A friend has had this on his TT - it was actually a probalem with the signal from the thermostat - Audi wanted £200 to fix it!

I replaced my faulty temperature sender on my A4 2002 1.9 tdi, £22 for the part from Audi main dealer and ½ hour of my time.(do not even need to drain the fluid)

Very common problem (if the sender is black it is the old problematic one if it is green it is the new updated one) easy to check with vag com, but it could also be the gauge itself which is a lot more expensive to fix.

I have read of problems with both but a lot more so with the sender including mine, less so with the gauge.

My car is the 1.9tdi 130bhp. Is the temp sender easy to locate? Who has vag com in the beds/bucks/herts area??

The only differences to how I did it is I removed the air box for easer access instead of the pipe and doing that gives you a lot better access than the access from above(I was replacing the Air filter at the time as well) & I removed the coolant cap & refitted it to cause a vacuum to slow the coolant from coming out.

If it’s a black sensor you will most likely have a problem.
