Not used V-Power diesel, but I used to run BP Ultimate Diesel in the Allroad TDI after it was tweaked and it returned higher MPG (32 instead of 31) and pulled better. Never had it dyno'd running the different fuels, so couldn't say how much difference it made to bhp and torque.

I've just noticed something in the pic I posted of the Shell pumps in Germany: The info is in German/French/English and it's clear what the RONS are and also how many points each fuel awards a ClubSmart card (same as V-Power card in UK).

Sums up the difference between Germany and the UK regarding just about everything to do with roads and transport! It's not difficult to improve things here.

Posting the octane rating is a legal requirement in Germany. More non-German speaking people visit Germany than non-English speaking people visit the UK.

Posting the number of points on your card is a marketing thing - i.e. buy this fuel and earn more points...

It's surprising how many garages in this country and fanchises and thus very variable in quality. Shell does seem better than most in my experience, my local BP although newly built and a large garage, nothing ever works and it take's 3 times of asking to get a reciept.

....Forgive me if I'm misinterpreting your post, but are you saying that the lack of useful information, as seen in Germany, is justifiably omitted in the UK?

I'll assume you're referring to the octane rating, rather than the language or points available for each fuel.

Shell run a system of "tent cards" to help raise awareness of specific promotions, hence why you'll see "Ferrari fuel for the road" on most Shell pumps at the minute. This is more cost effective and also easily replaceable (producing tent-cards and other promotional aides for the top retailers is one area of our business).

Re the multi-language point - is it not the case that visitors to the UK are "expected" to be able to read and understand English? I am not saying that this is right, but I think it's an expectation.

I'm not saying that the octane rating shouldn't be on the pumps - maybe people in the UK are expected to "know" that they only need normal or super-unleaded. I would say that 9 out of 10 people don't care - they just stick in unleaded. The rest (like TsNers) will care about it and those are the people companies like Shell target with their marketing, hence V-Power ads in mags like EVO, CAR and Top Gear.
