currently replacing my ageing seperates cabinet with something a bit more suitable and got thinking about a new amp and CD player. Oh, and speakers crazy.gif

been using Sony/Toshiba stuff up until now, and whilst my Sony speakers are fine, they lack a bit of real clout. Tosh DVD/CD player will be reassigned as DVD only and Sony speakers can be used as rear-fill or elsewhere.

Having discovered that my neighbours cannot hear my sound system through a double brick wall smile.gif I thought of going for the following

Cambridge Audio 640A amplifier

Cambridge Audio 640C CD player

Mordaunt Short 902i speakers

Already have the Cambridge Audio DAB300 radio so this should fit together quite nicely.

What's peoples opinions on Cambridge Audio amps and Mordaunt Short speakers ?

Well, in their heyday, the Shorts were aq bloody good speaker. Not sure what size these models are though Rich?? Floor standers?? Shelfies??

The Cambridge Audi gear served me ok when I was flat hopping after seperating from her that knows everything about everything there is to know about everything. Make sure you get some decent cable. For the kinda of gear you are looking at I would opt for something like QED with some Ixos or QED interconnects. If the speakers are intended to be mounted on stands then look at something like the Atacamas 169144-ok.gif

Rich,

If you are literally only going to play ya music, without being bothered that the speakers are on the floor etc etc and this is only for general background and housework listening, then this kit should do you ok.

Pretty much like JC and one or two others on here, I went through a period of having some pretty exotic stuff that cost a sh1t load of money, but these days I'm lucky if I get to play a cd once or twice a year.

On the NAD front, I've never really been that convinced that the kit has lived up to its name.....certainly wasnt the NADs for me

I had some Mordant & Short festival II when I was a lot younger and they were a really good speakers. Now I use B&W P4’s but I would not hesitate in using Mordant & Short again.

I agree with Mose I bought a Yamaha M170 DAB Micro Component system for the bedroom & listen to this all the time just as background music when I am getting ready I very rarely listen to my expensive separates in the front room anymore (that’s children for you).

The system you are looking at looks very good for the money.

well they didn't have the amp in stock so delivery next week but the rest works fine.

much warmer sound from a CD (tested with De La Soul 3 Feet High & Rising ), clarity is superb and that's just with my old Sony amp smile.gif Has to be said the remote control for the CD player is superb, real weighty feel and will handle all Cambridge components. The player also has a blue standby light, nice touch grin.gif

The speakers have far more presence, filling the room with really lively sound without shaking the floorboards to bits. If you know the album I mention above, 'Saturday' sounds absolutely cracking.

Just need the amp to complete the setup but for now it looks like this

IIRC most NAD stuff is good to above average BUT you need to match it with the right speakers and the shape/size/position of the room, otherwise it just doesn't sound right. Same is true of much hifi stuff, but NAD seems especially sensitive.

Personally I believe that once you spend more than a grand, 99.9% of the population can't hear the difference and/or don't listen to enough music and/or don't have the right room acoustics to make it worth spending more. Of course there are folks with the cash and the mindset to collect high-end stuff for bragging rights, and then there's the .0000001% who actually can hear the difference AND appreciate it.

Then of course there's the slight issue of getting audio material that's been produced to a high enough standard in the first place.

good guesses gentleman but how could you mistake either of those models for the STR-DB780 ? tongue.gif

it's been quite a good amp but I've never been bothered with true home cinema as I rarely watch DVD's and don't subscribe to Sky Movies.

Hence the switch to a normal 2/4 channel amp 169144-ok.gif

that's a good shout - I do have a real preference for how a setup should sound, hate too much bass but it has to be punchy and clear even at loud volumes (as per my car setup). But when you get to silly money stakes- pre-amps, bi-wiring etc - I'm not sure I could pinpoint exact differences.

looking forward to noticing a difference between the current Sony amp and the Cambridge one when it's delivered though - expecting to notice an improvement 169144-ok.gif

just looked at those mate - only in black or silver it would seem but I like the design.

might even look at wall-mounts but don't want the cheap-looking type, needs to be something subtle.

ah ha, just spoken to a shop in Brighton, on the way down there now. they have Atacama Nexus something or others. 169144-ok.gif
