watteee
i suspected my timing belt was gone but i got a call from the garage who was looking at it,they were fixing it under warranty.they told me that another belt that drives either the fuel pump or water pump, i cant remember what one, had snapped causing the actual timing belt have slipped a couple of teeth,so he was only going to repair the snapped belt and get it on the road free of charge, does this make sense to anyone who knows the timing belt setup

Tobes49
You have a main cam belt, drives from the crank to the 2 cam shafts also drive the water pump, Off the N/S cam a second belt runs the fuel pump. If the fuel pump belt breaks you just stop no damage will be caused to the engine. If the main belt snaps/slips teeth then this causes major damage. If the fuel pump belt snaps I would expect this belt to affect the main belt as they run next to each other with no sheild between them.
watteee
yeah think thats what happenned, the fuel pump belt has snapped thus affecting the main cambelt causing no damage to the engine although it did sound like a bag of spanners when turned over.
