Decked
After reading the post about Dan's carbon fetish... I was just wondering if anyone had thought about getting a carbon fibre bonnet? If so where can you get them from and at what price? I won't be interested if it requires pins (looks naff). But if they are strenthened I'll be tempted. Cheers
khutula
Looks like its not just Dan with a carbon fetish
Dan32
Lots of info on Vortex and the common consensus seems to be that no matter how much you spend, they are a pig to get to fit right and pins are a definite as without, the carbon around the latch can shatter as high speed air does its best to get underneath, sending the bonnet flying into the windscreen. Once saw a photo of this and the impact even dented the leading edge of the roof, writing the car off! And its not a fetish, more a perverse lusting! rs32
don't fight it Dan - it's OK to admit you secretly wish it was possible to have carbon-fibre underwear
khutula
I can see it now APS sponsored carbon fibre Y fronts
helfinger
i looked in to this a while ago...it will be no good if your tracking the car unless you use bonnet pins as it will be flying off......they are mainly just for show if you really drive your car i would not bother as most of the ones that you see for sale are not up to the job...you have to spend lots of £££ to get one that will be fine for all types of driving... AGK512
[ QUOTE ] I can see it now APS sponsored carbon fibre Y fronts [/ QUOTE ] Without wishing to get technical but would they not have to be hinged flap fronts due to the rigid nature of the material ! I wouldnt want to sit down in em too fast and they shatter (eye watering!)
RedRobin
For Mk5 you might wish to check out this: HERE Bonnets is linked from right-hand pic. HTH
Ritey
Having a carbon fibre front end on the mini I would suggest that when and if you fitted a bonnet to a golf, you wouldn't hinge it, just 4 points of contact in each corner. I also wouldn't use panel pins either unless it was a track car, you can infact get lockable bonnet clips that use a similar key to a bike d-lock that fit flush and spread the lift weight across a big washer under the bonnet. Much more secure than pins There are cheap versions of these though which I would seriously avoid having experienced them myself
Mook
Where the hell is that pic on Google when you want to find it of the yellow RS4 with a carbon fibre bonnet that let go at whatever the speed was and smashed the windscreen. It's been photo'd in the garage afterwards. That's enough to either put you off carbon fibre bonnets or to persuade you to get proper fixings for it... RedRobin
If you check out my link to the OSIR site, you'll read that their product can be used with OEM latch and hood stand without further modification.
Mook
I don't doubt it can Robin, but having seen a standard bonnet let go on an older M3 at a Donington track day, there's no way I would want to take the risk
RedRobin
The safety point you make, Mook, is extremely important. I'm just providing info as to where such bonnets might be obtained from.
Mook
No worries, Robin. Really like some of the interior carbon they do - you really could lose control of your senses kitting the whole car out with that stuff...
Pincher
I seem to remember Fifty_Pence (where'd he go?) was looking at theses ages ago - IIRC correctly he even found some with DPB interlaced with the CF weave.

AGK512
How much lighter is a CF bonet ? it would be cheaper to remove the rear seats or if like me you like your pies a few laps of the runnimg track .... cheaper to take it off the driver than the car

[/ QUOTE ] You might be taking about Eugene's car (from SoCal R32 fame). This is his CF hood, painted DBP, when he was still HPA FT360 (FT400 now). These pics were taken at the SoCal track day last April: (I hope it's ok to post these and that it doesn't take people too long to open the page... let me knows if that's the case and I will remove them; thanks)

When riding up any hill it is always the combined weight which matters!! The small, and therefore light, guys were the ones to watch! One had certain advantages going downhill of course!
