cjallaway83
Hi all, Was hoping someone could give me some advice on buying an imported car. I'm pretty much ready to order myself a Golf R32 and want to do it through a company called Select Automotive Ltd , not sure if anyones heard of them, they seem pretty good. Could tell me if I should watch out for anything? They said that it will be to Full UK spec, 1st registered in the UK etc. Will be ordering it to my spec so I can get it delivered for 1st of March on 07 plates. Is there something that I'm not thinking of that an imported RHD R32 is not going to have ? All advise is usefull Thanks in advance Chris
Mook
The car will be (should be!) exactly the same spec as a UK sourced car. The second-hand value will be less when you come to sell it (probably by as much as you save when you buy it new) so as long as you're happy to accept this, you should be fine. Keep the car longer than 2 years and you'll have to take out an extended warranty, other than that, you should be fine. Can't speak for Select Automotive, but as long as you choose a reputable importer that's been around for a long time, you should be OK.
cjallaway83
Cheers for the reply. What would determine that the second hand value would be less? I asked and got the impression that it wouldnt be listed anywhere that its an import because its first registered in the UK? Would it be any dif to one ordered from VW dealer apart from 1 year less warrenty? Thanks in advance again Chris
Mook
It'll be on the registration document that it's been imported. Can't remember where, though. Also, if it ends up in the dealer network, they always run a check on the chassis number (it shows up the original intended country). I wouldn't worry about it, t.b.h, if you're going to save the money to start with.
cjallaway83
Ok cool. Someone said on another forum to check about the sealant used on the car ? To protect it against our salty winters... Surely its not going to be any different? Any knowledge or views? Cheers
petsy
I think the only sign would be the German dealer's stamp in the service book.

Cheers [/ QUOTE ] As far as I know, Japan didn't used to use sealant on domestic cars, as they don't have a salt problem, and hence less corrosion proofing was needed. But that was a few years ago, they're probably all using sealant now, can't see it being an issue on a German car anyway tbh.

[/ QUOTE ] Interesting point that - VW make all their European targetted cars in the same factory, so the anti-corrosion measures will be the same, but... Salt isn't used on the roads in Germany, becuase it's massively environmentally unfriendly. Like many people in the UK would worry about it, with all the Chelsea tractors on the road... cjallaway83
Oh and also... Can anyone advise me on who is best to use for currency exchanging my finance money to EUROs? Lombard pay out in GBPs up to £50k so need to change to EUR . Who did everyone use and would they recommend? Cheers
wytco0
I used EuroImports for my car and they fixed the £ price when I paid the deposit and it didnt cost anything, so all the figures were done in £.
cjallaway83
Thanks for the reply wytco0, I read about euroimports on another thread. Looking at how much I get charged currently its only going to be £211 to change to Euros instead of going through euroimports that quoted about 1.5k higher or more if i remember. Anyone thats used Select tell me how they converted GBPs to EURs and how much they were charged.. cjallaway83
Oh I just noticed something in your signature wytco0 . Are curtain airbags optional extra or as standard? Confused me cause its in your sig and im thinking now its optional on an import? Cheers
petsy
just go to your bank and enter all the dealer's bank details on a bank transfer form. you must have the necessary funds in your account. iirc the bank will charge you something like £20 in charges. the final total cost will depend on the present exchange rate. wytco0
Chris re the airbags I dont think I ordered them but the car has them, maybe one of those things thats standard with Danish cars (like Cruise Control).
