PeterS
Just a quick observation, following on from Alastair's post on his 520d Touring. I was looking at the BMW website, thinking about new cars, as you do , and could help noticing just how much extra BMW charge for the larger engines. For example, a 525d is £3,400 more than a 520d. A 530d is £4,000 more than a 525d, and a 535d is £4,200 more than a 530d. Now I know that the 530d gains metallic paint, and the 535d auto transmission plus 'advanced' a/c, but even so On the 3 series the increment between 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 diesels is around £2,500, so is BMW underpricing the smaller engined 5's, or over pricing the larger ones? PeterS
Put another way, do I think my 535d is worth £11.5k more than a 520d? The answer is probably not Peter
CarMad
Nope I'd have to agree. But if you want the performance and you have the money as many do then its not a probem. I've been looking at a 325d against a 320d and if you just look at the performance figures etc. then its not worth it but it does have a far nicer noise. PeterS
Well its certainly made me think I was looking at changing the 535d early next year for a 335 (d or i, wasn't decided, keeping the 120d and ditching the Megane. I'm now leaning towards changing the 1 series for a 520d touring, covering the practical/economical/long distance cruiser role, and something altogether smaller/faster to cover the fun/open top role Probably won't be a BMW though . gizze
That's what I did. Well swapped the 535d for something a little more 'weekend'. The 535d is an awesome car, and if I had to have only one car I can't think of alot to beat it, after the DMS treatment it is seriously quick, practical and it can be fairly economical. But, it is a big car still, it is only 20cm short of being 5m long, and obviously this limits how much you can throw it around. But all in all it is one of the best all round cars on the market at the moment, and yeah I do think it is worth £11k more than the 520d, it starts to make the S6 and others look expensive.
