ACA_Chap
Evening everyone. I have a problem with my BT Voyager ADSL router, which I hope someone can solve. Basically, I had to reformat my PC and reinstall windows on it. That went fine, and the wireless router still works with my wireless laptop no problem. But, My desktop PC can't connect to the internet (it is wired to the router). I think this might be to do with the IP settings (I selected obtain IP address automatically). I don't have the installation disk anymore , so does anyone have any bright ideas? Thanks in advance
CarMad
Make sure you have TCPIP installed as a protocol. Set DNS and IP address to be obtained automatically. Turn off any firewall (whilst you are trying to get on) Make sure the cable you are using is ok with other equipment Try those as a start.. Calm Chris
Are you connected via a network card or USB between wired PC and router? If LAN network card you should have visual lamp indication at the PC card and the router. Have you redone the wizard, which will renew / find IP address? malagus
which model voyager is it - i may have the drivers on my PC for you, or can hunt them down - what ISP do you use?
gizze
have you logged into the router?? Check the ip address of the gateway on your laptop, click the icon in your tray or look at the wireless card in network connections, see what the gateway is. Then log into the router by typing this in your web browser. See if it says your pc is connected. You don't need any drivers of sotware for a router, and generally I wouldnt put them on anyway, just let windows handle it all, otherwise whn you get problems you have two areas where something could be wrong, if that makes sense? ACA_Chap
[ QUOTE ] have you logged into the router?? [/ QUOTE ] Hi Gizze. No I don't think I have and that's the problem. [ QUOTE ] Check the ip address of the gateway on your laptop, click the icon in your tray or look at the wireless card in network connections, see what the gateway is. Then log into the router by typing this in your web browser. See if it says your pc is connected. [/ QUOTE ] I checked what IP address my laptop had and then put this into the desktop PC browser, but no joy. Are you saying I should do this with the default gatweay? Sorry, I really don't know much about IT.. [ QUOTE ] You don't need any drivers of sotware for a router, and generally I wouldnt put them on anyway, just let windows handle it all, otherwise whn you get problems you have two areas where something could be wrong, if that makes sense? [/ QUOTE ] So the router should just be plug and play? Thanks for all the responses so far

gizze
When you say you are connected by USB I am totally lost, did you mean by ethernet cable?? Or maybe you can hook this router to a usb port and load up drivers?? if this is the case then you will need to find those drivers, however I would hook it up via the ethernet port anyway, far easier and you won't have to 'dial in' as it were. Have you got a network card in your pc?? have you get a network cable somewhere?? If you hook it up via ethernet cable I bet it will work straight away. ACA_Chap
Gizze I've tried using a standard ethernet cable direct from the router to the PC. Still no joy. It recognises the connection - if i go to connections>show all connections, there's a 400mbps connection running. It's just internet explorer won't work - probably something to do with IP settings (I've set to find automatically). why won't it work
Daz
OK, can you get to the command prompt on both the PC and the laptop and type IPCONFIG /ALL and then post the results back here.
ACA_Chap
Thanks Daz. BTW, off topic I know, but I think I may have seen you in Bournemouth a couple of months ago. The laptop says loads of stuff: Physical address, DHCP enabled (yes), auto config enabled (yes), numbers for: IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, DHCP server and DNS servers. For the desktop: Just says: "windows IP configuration"

In the past when I've re-installed XP the drivers for sound, LAN, VGA etc dont automatically re-install, so you need to add them from the drivers & utilities disc? Could be the problem?! ACA_Chap
No I haven't checked that, but when I click on connections>show all connections it shows the broadband connection running at 400mbs and the time connected. Does that not mean the drivers have been installed? Thanks for the idea tho
