New car Dilemma!

Hi every one I'm looking to change my car and decided I want to return to the Subaru fold. I'm wanting to buy a WRX wagon but at the moment can't afford a 2.5. I'm looking at modify over time. So should I wait to buy a new one or buy the 53 that I have my eye on? Is there any advantages to the 2.5 over the 2.0 when tuning? What kind of prices should I look at buying one second hand (03-05)? Thanks for any help sorry for all the questions.

Hi RRR250.

You have alot of choice. Given the way Subaru used prices are at the moment (going downwards feckin quickly generally... SAUER0421.GIF ), I'd be tempted to hang on until you can afford a 2.5. It's a better car, a brilliant engine, and with the new nose now makes the 03-05 car look very dated.

If you do go for an 03-05 car (I had a black 03 5 door - great car!), I'd go for low mileage rather than age and pay no more than 12 grand.

In terms of tuning, there's alot out there for both the 2.0 and 2.5. If you can justify the cost (£1700), I'd go for the official Prodrive Performance Pack. Takes an 03-05 2.0 WRX to 265BHP, huge dollops of midrange torque, 0-60 in 4.8 secs!

Thanks for the help think I'll wait and see what I can afford later in the year. Have found a dealer selling MY 06 WRX un reg for 16999 SL 5 doors! Just can't get a good deal on trade in for my car at the mo, which is an arse. I'm looking at it as a project car and it seems the 2.5 is the way forward. Have heard that on the 2.5 PPP they keep both cats or change them for sports cats is that true?

They do keep both cats. As far as what to buy goes I'd say it depends on how far you want to go with tuning it. One of the most effective mods for tuning on 2 litre cars is to fit a 2.5 so if you are going for out and out power you are probably better waiting until you can afford a 2.5 and save yourself the bother of swapping engines.

If you just want to tune it to make it a bit more fun you would be better going for the 2 litre as there is still a lot that can be done with the 2 litre.

You might get more for your money, but any independent tuners are unlikely to have had the development time and budget with the car that Prodrive has had.

The PPP on the (non STI) WRX is stunning - 30% more torque gives it the real world performance to match a standard STI.

I've no idea what they're up to now, but I'd check out Scoobysport as a possible alternative. Pete has been modding Imprezas for over a decade. 169144-ok.gif

At Power station you get 290bhp and 330 of torque for £1399 (milltek with sports CAT, remap, K&N) including warranty from the 2.5.

Have used TSL in the past and they were fantastic would trust with my car again.

Both companys will give you more for your money than PPP and have very good reps.

Thanks for that, am out for a drive in one tomorrow. Bit surprised by the size of it, bit more legroom than the A4 in the back, but a much smaller boot.

Have managed to find a PPP demo so will see how tomorrow goes drive wise, first run in a Subaru. 169144-ok.gif

edit, its an estate 2.5 WRX with PPP

New Impreza prices at dealers seem to be taking somewhat of a dive at the moment (as expected I guess with the new model just round the corner). Anyone know the cheapest price that a dealer is selling a WRX or WRX SL for? Or what would be a reasonable offer to make to a dealer (given that they are struggling on the sales front somewhat!)? Ta.

I think it will really depend on the dealer's circumstances. Best deals will be on very late/pre-reg'd cars rather than new I think. They only have a certain margin to play with on new cars, so would have to be able to offset a decent discount some other way. You won't get a franchised dealer down to car supermarket prices.

Thanks Garcon. I read on another forum today that a UK dealer is advertising WRX's at £16500 so that seems (to me anyway) to be a reasonable starting point for negotiations!
