GlynH
Hi there, I am thinking of saying goodbye to my beloved Scorpio 24v which has served me well over the last 5 years and has now done 150k I am looking for a replacement and have as good as settled on an S8 Thanks to resources like this I have learned a lot but have some questions regarding the SatNav system fitted to it. I have seen a 2001 model on a '51 plate - is this likely to have the latest version SatNav system fitted? I see references to RNS-C/RNS-D/RND-E,TMC/MMI etc. etc. but am not sure what it all means or how it will apply to a '51 model S8...questions follow; 1. How do I determine which model SatNav is fitted? The LCD display looks like a 4:3 screen ratio to me - is the latest 16:9? 2. I am guessing this would be the CD-ROM version as I have seen an invoice for December 2005 for a new SatNav CD - is the latest system DVD and if so what are the advantages over CD? 3. Does it utilise Dynamic Route Guidance here in the UK? The manual I have seen mentions Germany only...If so does it use RDS info only or can it take advantage of GSM? 4. How is it for iPOD integration? I currently use a Dension IceLink Plus in my Scorpio and that allows iPOD control from the steering wheel but will not list ID3 tags and only displays up to 99 tracks. Is the S8 any better in this respect? 5. Is it straightforward to add a PS/2 for DVD movie playback and reprogram to allow viewing on the move? 6. Is the LCD display in the console between the clocks also utilised for SatNav info along with the main colour LCD display? 7. I have been spoiled by TomTom and its postcode search - I am guessing there is no postcode search on any version of the Audi SatNav? Sorry for all the questions... --- Regards, -=Glyn=-

craigyb
The S8 of that year will have RNS-D with 4:3 screen. TMC will be available with the correct disk, DX disk with ITIS I believe is the correct disk. 2007 disks are available from around £160 1. How do I determine which model SatNav is fitted? The LCD display looks like a 4:3 screen ratio to me - is the latest 16:9? 16x9 is the latest DVD nav, but it is available only as a sort of retrofit, never from the factory, several people on this forum have had there A8/S8 converted to DVD nav, but 2 problems remain. The colour does not match the dash and the display between the clock will not display the nav directions. 2. I am guessing this would be the CD-ROM version as I have seen an invoice for December 2005 for a new SatNav CD - is the latest system DVD and if so what are the advantages over CD? See above, DVD covers europe, but is not yet TMC, DVD version is faster, has a larger screen. 3. Does it utilise Dynamic Route Guidance here in the UK? The manual I have seen mentions Germany only...If so does it use RDS info only or can it take advantage of GSM? TMC see above 4. How is it for iPOD integration? I currently use a Dension IceLink Plus in my Scorpio and that allows iPOD control from the steering wheel but will not list ID3 tags and only displays up to 99 tracks. Is the S8 any better in this respect? Audi and Dension Ipod interfaces are available same as your scorpio, no track info. An S8 will have a CD changer so be careful, only the Dension gateway 400 will allow for CD and Ipod togther. 5. Is it straightforward to add a PS/2 for DVD movie playback and reprogram to allow viewing on the move? For your car it should also have a TV tuner, aix inputs are available as AV1 & AV2 on the Tuner. TV on the move is done by cutting the speed pulse wire and installing a switch, you lose GALA when the TV in motion is enabled. 6. Is the LCD display in the console between the clocks also utilised for SatNav info along with the main colour LCD display? Yes 7. I have been spoiled by TomTom and its postcode search - I am guessing there is no postcode search on any version of the Audi SatNav? 4 digit post code searching is available on CD and DVD nav from AUdi. See attached pic of the DVD nav retrofitted into an S8

GlynH
Thanks for the comprehensive reply Craigyb and the replies from 'the other guys' So the 2007 CD-ROM should sort the TMC bit and give me the latest mapping. Can I get this from you or only from a Main Dealer? I thought I saw a screenshot of the display showing artist/song info somewhere? Must have been wishful thinking on my part then... Cutting the VSS (speed pulse?) wire is the only solution? Reprogramming through software is not an option? 4-digit postcode? Next to useless...OX16 will guide me to Banbury (population <50K) but what then? I was hoping to ditch the TomTom but may have to rethink. No point asking if RNS-D can alert to speed cameras then? Can you recommended a satisfactory DVD option and if so how would I control the DVD player from the front of the car? Thanks & regards, -=Glyn=-
craigyb
In the CD version TMC has been available from 2003/4. You can get these from Ebay or places like the navshop.com . Song info etc is available for the DVD version playing from SD cards, maybe thats where your confusion lies. On the RNS-D, cutting the gala is the only way, on the RNS-E it can be reporgrammed. Ok 4/5 digit postcode search, which in your case you would get OX16 0-9, in my case I would get M33 0-9 No speed cameras as far as I'm aware. There are 3rd party DVD and DVB=TV's that can be controlled from the head unit. Look at the Dietz IMU series of interfaces, but you would have to lose the TV tuner to install one. I would say just use the remote eye at the front to control a media player like the Rapsody 100 like a lot of guys have done.
GlynH
Hello Craigyb, Thanks for the quick reply - again So the 2005 CD that was purchased last December should have it...good. Do you have any idea when the RNS-E became available in the S8 as a factory fit? I have seen a 2002 'Final Edition' advertised - not sure what the 'FE' has over & above the earlier model - I wonder if this would be RNS-E? Remote eye - didn't know this existed...also what sort of controls does the steering wheel have? On pictures I have seen I can only see two switches on it...stereo control? Cruise? Tiptronic - or is that on the gear selector only? Are there any other resources out there that would stop me from asking stupid questions incessantly? Electronic copy of the owners manual perhaps? Your website looks interesting...better not spend all my money on the car then! Thanks & kind regards, -=Glyn=-
craigyb
When buying a CD for the RNS-D, two versions exist Non TMC and TMC, make sure you get the latter which is more expensive, these are available from 2003/4 onwards with TMC. I stated earlier the RNS-E was NEVER a factory option on the S8, RNS-C, then D were the only nav systems with 4x3 screens. Only retrofit of the RNS-E is an option. Final Edition was a push to unload the last of the D2 chassis, things like rear entertainment systems and 20" wheels were offered on them. But the rear system is completely isolated from the front nav, so dont expect control of it. The S8 didnt have a MFSW, only TIP controls for the gear changes, there is a MFSW for the A8 that did control the radio etc, but I've never seen one in a car. I have seen a picture of one. The remote eye would be used in conjunction with a DVD player or media player to control it from the front of the car. As I have done in my S8, RS6 then A8. Yeah it's about time the stupid questions stopped.... Have a look around at the various forums...
GlynH
Thanks again for taking the time to reply Craigyb - and for your patience... What? No multi-function steering wheel?? I'll stick with the Scorp then... Have a good Christmas... Kind regards, -=Glyn=-
craigyb
Oh, hope I haven't put you off, the S8 is about 1,000,000 times better than a scorpio. I'm still toying with buying a 2002 one myself for playing with.
GlynH
It'll take more than that to put me off! The Scorp has been a great car - no matter what I drive I am never disappointed when getting back into the Scorpio. 24V Cosworth heads helps though - obviously the S8 feels much better - it is in a different league - but the Scorp doesn't disgrace itself even now - when I jump in it still feels quick, quiet & smooth. A 2002 to 'play with'? How the other half live... I need to talk to you about upgrading the RNS-D, m/f/s/w & 'phone option soon... Kind regards, -=Glyn=-
