S4_Dan
hi, I own an S4 but my old man and I, are going to have a look at an S8, 2000. its only got 17k, FASH and is Fully Loaded with every conceivable extra fitted. Couple of questions..... is the 2000 model facelift or pre-facelift? or did they change on that year? is so, what are the noticable difference i should look for? Any common faults on these that we should look / listen out for? Would this be the 40v/360Bhp engine in a 2000 model? how would i tell? any other pointers or help would be great. I know i should do a search etc but i really dont have time tonight or tomorrow and my old man has only just sprung the veiwing on me! Cheers in advance guys. come TonyA8......help me! cruiser647
I think it is the 5v, 360 BHP model. The engine covers will say 5v on each cam cover. I think the weak spots one these engines are the thermostats, and with so few miles on it, it might be getting faulty. Would also need a cam belt doing (age of car), change the thermostat and oil pumps too. But everything else should be clock work! How come it has so few miles? S4_Dan
The guy who owns it is a local very rich fella who has lots of other vehicles. the engine was replaced by audi 2 years ago at 15k, so brand new engine in with 2k. There was a fault on the original engine that audi could not rectify, so they replaced the chaps engine and kept his old one to runs tests etc to trace he fault! all warrented and stamped for etc by Audi. car has always been garaged and very rarely comes out and only on hot dry days too! the car is immacualte, my old man has veiwed it not so long ago but decided to look at S4/RS4....now he wants to look at this again. Think he really like the size/space/power yet so subtle looks!
cruiser647
In that case, buy it! Sounds brand new! You should get 80K miles of hassle free motoring. 80K = cambelt change.
S4_Dan
I'm sure he will be very tempted, an I'll just tweak him a little and fairly certain he will buy it! What sort of price range would we be looking at? the chap had 20 - 22k in mind about 6months ago. I've told my old man around 18/19k??? cruiser647
For £19K, he can get a newer D3 A8, so should be nearer 15K?? Not sure, but some-one else should be able to answer that one for certain

Alexsr6
very little to go wrong and have you not noticed that audi themselves are going back,ie,all their new v8 engines are 32 valve engines plus they were and still are the highest revving production engines by any car manufacturer. [/ QUOTE ] Hi Alex glad you got sorted with the S8 I'm sure youll have many happy miles of motoring ahead of you. My "demonstration" was enough then, and to think Audi told me in writing that I had no loyalty to the brand, at this rate they should be paying me commission
obevz
G'day Tony, You should have all the specs in the wheel well of the spare tyre...that should tell you what you have (unless some sneaky critter changed it!)

ghemmings
I'm looking forward to buying a facelift S8 next year, but now I worried. What exactly does go wrong with the 40V compared to the 32V engine? is it just the thermostat or are there any other reasons why some of you recommend the earlier S8? Am I right in saying the Auto 'box is more robust on the facelift model (seen to have read it somewhere on here)? Cheers.
Alexsr6
all the best
cruiser647
If I had the choice, I'd have the 40 valve. The thermostat is the only dodgy bit on the 40 v (IIRC!!)
S4_Dan
Well, i wish a very merry xmas to you all. my old man bought the S8! what a machine! in a lovely dark red colour! Cant wait for delivery of it! Cheers for your help and input guys. Dan
cruiser647
The dark red for an S8 is very unusual. Is it metallic or plain red? I think burgundy is a great colour for large cars. Hope he enjoys it!!!!!!!!!
S4_Dan
its Metallic paint, he is loving every moment and he aint picked it up yet! ha ha
A8_Tony
Dan, you've gotta get some pics up When's he picking it up? I'd suggest he tries to get a gearbox ATF & filter change thrown in before he does These here gearboxes are a tad expensive to replace
S4_Dan
Will get some pics up as soon i can. The guy is putting the car through a full service before it goes so maybe, just maybe, it will get done. I'll mention it to my old man as he is popping over today, sadly not in his yet acclaimed S8 but a Saab 900 Turbo Cab! sounds awesome! [/ QUOTE ] that is not a standard service item. You have to tell them to do it, and even then make sure they remove the auto tranny sump pan to clean/replace the magnets/filters. Might add an extra £200 max to the service price.
