Xbox 360 as Media Center etc and what to buy

Guys, I'm looking for a bit of help here understanding the different packages available.

I've been thinking about getting a Media Center PC for downstairs for a while, but the thing is, if I were to do it, I'd have to do it properly. Which would cost a fair amount. Thinking about it though, I've heard that the Xbox can be used as a Media Center type thing, which would solve my want for a gaming console, and a media center.

I've seen Core and Premium packages.. I understand the Premium packages have a hard disc with them. What's the hard disc used for, can it be upgraded to a larger one?

What do I need to get one up and running as a Media Center (I have a server upstairs that I can stream from) and what package should I be buying? I also want the clever radio headset and wireless controller etc.

Also, what are the benefits of chipping? I know there are a lot more benefits than just playing copied games these days.

Shark, it'll pretty much do what you want out of the box, if you connect it up to your home network it will be able to access photos, music and video (only MWV files though) from your PC. The XBox is a bit too noisy in my opinion to be a good media player.

You can store media to the XBox hard drive but it's only 20GB you can expand this space with a USB hard drive if you want.

If you have a Windows Media Center PC then the XBox will work as a Media Extender, if you have XP then with a download and Windows Media Player 11 you can still access the media files on your computer. It's easy enough to set up.

The XBox Premium Package comes with a wireless controller and a headset that plugs into the wireless controller, the wireless headset is extra.

I've heard that the downside to chipping is that you can't get on XBox Live, I don't know if this is true though.

For £130 you can now buy an external 360 HDDVD. Im sure this will nicely undercut he market. I think that's what ill go for...

These external units have now been hacked to connect them to a PC, that's a very cheap HD-DVD player grin.gif
