S3Mark
I have just changes my S3 for a 2003 S4, but not sure if there is a problem with it. At lower speeds (<50) it appears to come from the front and sounds as if I am running over some small rumble strips, not disimilar to the noise on the concrete section roads. Even on reasonable roads this happens. Its not really loud and cannot be heard at speeds above 60. Is this something I should worry about or is this normal? cosmicblue
Tricky, noises are kind of subjective things. It maybe worth just running your hands over the front tyre tread surfaces - if they feel 'ratcheted', i.e. some of the tyre blocks seem to be sticking up further than others then you have one of the indicators of worn front shocks. You have a high performance vehicle there - it would be worth getting a pukka Audi dealer to give it the once-over for safety's sake. J_C
I seem to remember reading of a similar complaint on one of the other forums and it turned out to be a dodgy wheel bearing, so it might be worth checking that out too
S3Mark
Thanks guys, I was thinking wheel bearing as it appears worse when cornering. I would have hoped the dealer I bought it from would have picked that up on inspection
Tizzy
Welcome to TSN - think that makes three B6 S4's including mine and John Carter's. I would agree with the wheel bearing theory as well TBH - see if you can get Audi to see to it as warranty / goodwill!
S3Mark
Thanks, it is a wheel bearing, being replaced next week under warranty. This is my local delaer who appear to have reasonable after sales service. Now very impressed with the dealership I bought it from if they cannot even notice a nosy wheel bearing. spikeyboy
Glad to hear it is being sorted. JC think it may have been my post on the 246 forums as i had the same sound from front pasanger side - took ages for the dealer to actually agree to change the wheel bearing but it did the trick. Tizzy dont forget my B6 S4

P_G
As does Drewcam, so if you take into accout all S4's regardless of model there must be nearly 20 in all.

the911sc
Still have my S4 but the RS4 is coming next week as soon as the DVLA get around to sorting the plate change over.. Back to the topic of this, I had my chain tensioners changed under warranty as have some others I think. Symptoms a rumbling or ratling at cold start up or slow speed in a high gear... Its not fatal, its just annoying and now an updated part although I have seen B7's in for chain tensioners also..
