Water in footwell

I know this subject line has been posted many times before but, I have just discovered a pool of water in the rear drivers side passenger footwell (underneath/behind) the drivers seat. Apart from a hole in the floor is there anything that could cause this none of the rest of the carpet is wet.

Car is a 2000 1.8 20V Passat with 110,000 miles on it.

I was hoping someone could shed some light on this?

Water probably passing beneath drivers carpet into rear offside passenger well/carpet. More than likely blocked drain holes beneath battery allowing water to rise and finding a poor bulkhead seal, ecu, bonnet cable-release grommet possibly others. A poor pollen filter seal wets the front passenger carpet so its not that this time.

Clear your drain holes first.

I had this trouble with my 96 Passat, I went to every available forum on the web and couldnt find a resolution until I decided I was going to find out what it was. I to my car into the garage stripeed everything out (seats, carpet and sound proofing things) then I put the hose on the roof of the car and got inside and hey presto I found it. On the bulk head just under were the wipers are the air inlet to the car, I found that the seal on the bottom of it was broke so I took it off and give it the old Silicone treatment, and put the hose back on it for 2 hours and not a speck of water. Its been 3 months since I done it and we've had torrential rain here(Northern Ireland) and not a drop.....Problem Solved. I hope this is of some use to you

I have this every now and then, only in in the rear foot well. I found that it only happened when the car was parked in a certain spot on my drive with a slight slope at my old house.

I moved a year ago and had no trouble until yesterday when, as it was due to snow, i reversed onto my drive instead of forwards. In the morning there was no snow but a lot of rain and about a pint of water in the rear footwell. It seems to come in through the door seal at some point and run along the seat runner cover into the rear. I think the car must have had a knock in a previous life and there must be some sort of indentation in the door or seal. I have a '97 20V.

If you have blocked or partially blocked drain holes you increase the chances of water getting in if you park the car uphill as you have effectively reduced the 'storage volume' before it leaks in through any failed seals.

Parking downhill reduces the chance of water leakage so if you have water in the car and unable to sort immediately park it downhjill.

Regularly check drain holes by removing any visible leaves/deblis first and then pour a bucket of water down the side of the battery. BOTH drain holes should clear the water very quickly and equally. If they don't you have either one or both holes blocked or partially blocked.

If you aren't sure whether your pollen filter housing seal has been replaced with the later improved seal don't allow the water level to rise above the lower edge of the pollen filter black plastic housing otherwise you risk wetting the front passenger carpet. Get this seal replaced if if in doubt as it is very important.

ABOVE ALL KEEP THE DRAIN HOLES CLEAR AND ABLE TO CLAER THE WATER.

As far as I'm aware it is not a service item so beware and do it yourself.

hi all i had a problem like this when i had a mk 6 escort 4 door the floor on the drivers side was wet every time it rained at first i thought it was getting in from the door rubbers so i replaced the seals and waited for the next rain fall and guess what it was still getting in so i search all over the door to see where it was getting in but the bottom of my door pocket was wet when it rain so i took the door panel off and watch the rain running in and it was running down and over the speakers in the door and soaking the door panel and getting in so i got a carrier bag and cut it in half and taped it over the speaker now the rain is running off the speaker and down to the bottom of the door and it stop leaking in the car problem sorted so might be worth checking

Thanks for the responses guys, I have checked the drain holes under the battery and found that they were severely blocked with leaf litter and other crap. there was about 2 inchs of water under the battery when I got round to looking, removed the battery and cleared out the holes, no new water has got in since am still trying to get rid of the existing though. Followed this great guide:- Linky

Anyone got any ideas on what the quickest way to get rid of the water is, I have no drive, it's not sunny at the moment, don't really want to remove the carpets if at all possible, am waiting on delivery of a wet/dry vacuum to see if that will help at the moment.

cheers for all of your advice as well guys.

Karlos.

I recently had a large amount of water in the rear footwell behind the driver's seat. The best way to remove the water is to buy some size 5 Pampers nappies (they are the largest) and lay them out flat in the footwell. I put down 2 at a time and managed to soak up nearly all the water. The carpet was just damp and dried out naturally over a few days. I hope this helps
