ilovetea
I drove an TDI 170 (non quattro) and 2.0 TFSI quattro today. I liked both, but would prefer the economy of the diesel. When i had the TFSI quattro i did notice it handled better on the greasy roads today, but its hard to say 100% as it was only a shortish drive. Anyway I'm just after a some thoughts from owners really... So, question is... If you have quattro on your TDI 170 do you think its worth it (ie would u get it again), and does it slow the car down with the extra weight? If you dont have quattro on the 170, would you consider it if you were buying your car again!! I can afford the quattro, but its at the upper end of my budget, so if genral consensus is its not worth it then thats fine, but also if most people like it / wish they had it then i'll go for it! Not sure when or if i'll be able to demo a TDI quattro and i'm wanting to put my order in pretty soon, hence asking on here Thanks in advance
CarMad
Welcome to TSN It depends on how you drive to be honest. With so much torque going through the front wheels its very easy to wheel spin to be honest. But if you are a relaxed type of driver then it might be fine. If you like to press on and put your foot down then Quattro is a great help. I've got the 2.0T FSI Sportback with DSG and mine sometimes struggles but the extra economy over a Quattro and the more linear power delivery of the Petrol makes it a little less of a problem. In the dry its not really a problem at all, the car is very quick.. in the wet it does need to be tamed. I could have got Quattro but DSG gives me the ability to chill out when I want to but go on maximum attach when I don't and it saves me money on fuel and company car tax. aliAUDI
I drive a front wheel drive 170 tdi sportback. love the car!! just as quick as a 2.0T down the backroads, and more to the gallon! plus the torque it produces is amazing.. Quattro? Lets just say i had a 140 Q A3 whilst we saw a foot of snow where i live, and the thing was out of this world! sooooooo good! the roads i threw at it were very harsh, and it just battled through! Quattro is fantastic, wheather you have a particular need for it...? only you can decide..
Colmartin
I think it depends upon the sort of driving you do. If you're going to be mainly doing motorway driving, then the Quattro will not really add anything, if like me, you live in the country and drive mainly on back roads, then Quattro is perfect, especially in the winter when they are icy or when it snows, as stated above, they really can shift in the snow (just a case of stopping them!) I found that the Quattro made my 140 feel a little sluggish and therefore had planned to upgrade to a 170, but I got sensible and purchased a new house with the cash and cashed in on the Audi, the 170 Quattro will be my next car though! Vertigo1
I have a FWD 170 TDI S-Line. To be honest, the main reasons I didn't go for Quattro were the increased cost (£1400 premium after all) and the markedly increased CO2 emissions (company car). I don't think there's any doubt that Quattro will give you ultimately better grip when really pushing it or when the weather is foul like it has been lately but personally I didn't feel the advantages were quite enough to justify the extra outlay in purchase price or tax. It is very easy to light the front wheels up when making a quick getaway but tbh, once you're rolling and into second gear, there's still more than enough traction up front and you won't spin the fronts in the dry. This is with 225 tyres on 18" rims of course, so there's a fair bit of rubber on the road.
wallboy
I have an S-Line TDI 170 and I love it. However mine is DSG which makes (IMO) progress through the first couple of gear changes very eaasy. Living in London calls for huge amounts of changes due to all the traffic and having DSG has made life much easier. I had a 2wd 140 and thought it too was excellent. The 140 got about 6-7 mpg more than the 170. I currently average 45.4. Probably 70-30 split between M-way and town driving. Hope this helps. edo
Cant have S-tronic and Quattro, so as I wanted S-tronic, Quattro off the list. Quattro is good (I have had S4, TT, A8), but remember - it adds weight, makes the A3 boot shallower, and only helps with traction, you dont go round corners or stop any better.. ilovetea
[ QUOTE ] makes the A3 boot shallower, [/ QUOTE ] Ahhh i didnt know this! How much space do you lose, and is it just a raised boot floor or are there awkward bulges in the boot space ??
edo
Dont know the exact amount, but the quattro floor is just higher than non.
