mjdyer
OK i'm after a new car to replace my A3 TDI 140 which i find pretty quick as it is, but....as with all new things i fancy something bigger and better Now 0-60 doesnt really interst me, i just want a car with good overtaking ability. I drove the 2.0 TFSI and 170TDI today and thought they were both good but the TDI seemed a bit quicker when wanting a sudden surge to get past something whilst already on the move. No this could be because i'm usd to driving a TDI and wasnt revving th TFSI enouigh. Anyway, is there much difference between 'overtaking times' ie 50-70, 70-90 sort of speeds in these cars? Any sites with figures? Cheers Martin
CarMad
The 170TDI can feel like it has more power because it comes and goes in one big dollop. However in real against the clock test the 2.0T FSI is quicker. The Diesel needs more gear changes than the petrol, it depends on how you drive them as well. Drive a petrol like a diesel and it won't feel quick, and the same the other way around. Which engine did you prefer for sound and refinement ? And is economy a big issue ?!? Also if the DSG or 2wd cars will be quicker than the Quattro when your on the move. Good link on 2.0T vs 170 TDI gearing / Speed comparison. edo
Surely the TDi would need less gear changes/less reving?
Cupramax
[ QUOTE ] Surely the TDi would need less gear changes/less reving? [/ QUOTE ] The rev range of the diesel is less so it will need more changes...

Vertigo1
[ QUOTE ] The rev range of the diesel is less so it will need more changes... [/ QUOTE ] Not quite that simple. The diesel may develop power/torque over a narrower range of revs than the petrol but, as a percentage of the total revs available, it's similar. For example, the 170 TDI will pull hard from 2000 to 4000 rpm which is 44% of the total rev range (4500rpm red line). The petrol will pull hard from 2500 to 6000 which is 54% of the total rev range (6500 red line), so not much as much difference as you'd think. The petrol has 15% more power than the diesel but 25% less torque. I reckon it'd be closer than you think
russk
But isn't 'percentage of revs' an arbitrary measurement? I agree that with power/torque differences it will be quite close, but gearing is what comes into play here. What you're really looking at is a 2000rpm 'power' range versus a 3500rpm 'power' range. All that said, I know I'm not really helping to answer the original question though! ;-) I agree with CarMad, the diesel feels quicker because of the nature of the power delivery but the petrol is slightly faster. Dandle
The TDI170 sportback Quattro is only 10kg heavier than the 2.0TFSI sportback Quattro but takes nearly a whole second more to do the sprint to 60mph. If it looses by that much on a standing start then I wouldn't think it will have the acceleration from a rolling speed to keep up with the petrol. *just my 2p worth*
livall
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Not quite that simple. Have a read of the link CarMad posted, it will answer most of your questions and give a very good comparison of both engines pros and cons.
