Golfer
OK guys some imput required. I may consider one of these in the future in saloon form, what do you think the finish/build quality and reliability is like now?. I moved away from Merc some years ago due to the standard of workmanship diminshing, has it improved?. I think this particular merc could be some tool, it's this or the RS6 prohaps. Cupramax
According to the latest TG survey Merc quality is still appaling. Not sure if this applies to the top end models though... details here. http://www.tyresmoke.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/1086118/an/0/page/0#1086118
garcon magnifique
I keep hearing that they've been working hard to bring quality levels back up to those traditionally expected of Mercedes. Certainly, road tests of recently introduced models (from the revised A Class to the new S Class) are indicating that is the case. The E Class has just had a fairly extensive make-over, so you'd hope for some improvements there too. EVO magazine had a go in an E63 fairly recently and were quite impressed. It's a stonking engine! One of my concerns would be the Mercedes dealer network - they were terrible (in my experience), but again one hopes Mercedes are realising what's expected of them. DHA
Are the AMG models built on a different production line or is it just the engines?

Or is it completly different?? Geoff PS. Things at MB are still pretty depressing that includes dealers.
Woppum
The car is certainly worth a try. I have heard its much more of a drivers car than the supercharged AMG - although it doesn't have the grunt. The CLS is supposed to be the one to have though. Why do you prefer the E-Class? In terms of reliability they are awful. The Maybach goes wrong every 5 minutes, the S600 hasnt worked properly for over a year and the dealer service on BOTH is a total joke. They just never seem to be able to diagnose a problem. I think there is simply just too much to go wrong on these cars. Having said that the SL55 and 65 never had a single fault in each of their 2yrs of ownership! I take it you have thought about the M5? If you like a proper auto, comfort and sheer grut the Merc is unbeatable. Everything in life is a compromise.

330dcoupe
My dad's had a E320 CDI for a couple of years - and seriously, we have never had any problems with it's build quality, reliability or the services/customer care. It's been a great car. I just think Merc has too many stuck up customers who expect too much and\or customer care like Merc once used to provide. It won't happen - one contributing factor to all that is that Merc sell their cars by 100 folds compared to the olden days when the cheaper and more affordable models weren't around. This naturally increases customer demand/work load - which will lead to shortfalls as far as SOME stealers are concerned. I'm pretty sure the likes of Bentley or Ferrari, just two manufactures who still hold that 'exclusive' tag don't get this sort of whinging from their customers- simply because time is available at an abundance for the stealers to service cars properly and efficiently. Well that's my stab in the dark as far as the situation goes. I haven't had a chance to drive any of the new models with the 6.3 engine just yet - but it's suppose to be 'much better' than the 5.5 supercharged engine. If that's the case - then oh bhoy it's going to be absolutely immense! I loved the CLS55 AMG I had for a short while – totally addictive sound track – alone worth paying the big bucks for. Stunning. Woppum
You may have been lucky but: Waiting 2 months for a front passenger seat belt part for the Maybach Being stuck outside the S600 while watching the electric seats front and back moving about on their own inside the car! The ECU deciding to turn off 6of the 12 cylinders for no reason (happened 3 times!) The airmatic suspension on the S600 would collapse after every use. It took 1 YEAR for Merc to find the cause of the problem! The radio in the maybach refused to play raido 4 The front phone in maybach was stuck outside its revolver. The ABS turns itself of every time a little electrical socket comes unstuck under the seat. The S600 must have gone in to the shop 20 times for this fault. However as I said, both SL's were totally fine!
Ian_C
Strange, for the first of the 2001 SLs were apparently really poor build. Are they built in America or Germany? Ian

I use Hudsons of London for all the Ferrari work and they are excellent. Bentley are simply fantastic. I use Harwoods and the service is out of this world. Call backs, help instantly - get parts quick - fit you in for service. Put it this way. I now use Hudsons for all the cars except for the Bentley. The Bentley can stay at Harwoods. Mercedes are simply the worst and most unorganised dealers I have worked with. Ferrari are the most pompous...

gizze
I have been trying to order a new S class for my old man, now on the third dealer as the first two just haven't bothered coming back to us with a price, I have left 3 messages with both of them after the initial call where I gave them the specs!!! If someone called me up an said 'I want to order a car with this spec. that comes to £66k, can you give me your best price and lead time please?' I would be hounded them until the order was placed. Absolute tossers!
