hi all!

im planning to buy the three door bmw1 when it comes out and ive already narrowed it down to the two engines mentioned: 118i and 118d ?!

performance marks are preeety much equal, with 118i being a bit better on accelerating from 0, and 118d a bit better on overtaking...

what i really like about the 143hp 118d is the 60mpg consumption (although 118i's 48mpg is also quite good with the same 143hp), but i'll always prefer any non-diesel engine sound!

the car will mainly be used in the urban areas (not much traffic here, so i'll be zipping around much)

with maybe a trip or two to the countryside a month

so... any comments are welcomed:

-which car has lower engine noise? for example: while cruising at higher speeds?

-which engine is easier to live with? (meaning, which one needs more servicing, care, etc.)

in essence... which one (out of these two) would you take, and why?

tnx!

118i feels gutless comapred with the derv, I get 35mpg from my 120d and managed 24mpg from the 120i I borrowed, the 118i I would guess is the same.

You need to take both out and see for yourself really.

My mum has a 118d manual and that gets 43mpg all day long, with the new features on the 3 door I would expect nearer 50mpg.

Knock the stereo up a few notches below M-Way speeds and you won't hear any sound difference.

As Gizzie says, the d will be an awful lot easier to drive (and I suppose I have to say quicker) unless you specialise in battering the swingers out of not particularly powerful petrol engines.

You might even investigate DMS (but I don't know if they go down to re-maps for the 118d). Alternatively, how about living with a 5 Dr and looking at a 120d?
