s9omer
Hi All, I have recently bought myself an Anniversary 180 and I am very happy with it. Decided to join this great forum and here goes my first post... There is a slight problem and I was hoping someone could shed some light on to what the problem might be (apologise if this topic has been discussed before, did a search but nothing returned) On a cold start, the car idles just over 1000 revs, as the revs start to drop I hear a flapping noise coming from the passenger side of the engine. The noise stays for about 5 seconds and then stops as the revs idle below 1000. This happens everytime I start the car when engine is cold otherwise it is fine. Any advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Omer
rsclzcd
My MK4 R32 used to do this as well. I used to start it up, turn it off, then restart it again straight away, the revs drop below 1000 immediately then, reported it to dealer on service and they said they couldn't find anything wrong. Didn't push it any further as was trading it in for my new motor two months later. Sorry I can't explain the problem, at least its not just you! RedRobin
Warm Welcome to Tyresmoke, Omer . Generally, the Mk5 GTI makes unexpected noises on first start up. Most people have reported this including wondering if they had bought a diesel! I'm afraid I'm not sure about the sound you specifically describe and can't comment meaningfully because I have a Milltek exhaust.

RedRobin
....Yes, sorry - I don't have the Ed30 Anni, I missed that fundamental part. However, it still may be useful for people to know that the Mk5 GTI generally sounds 'rough' on first tick-over as others have previously reported too. Does the Ed30 sound recognisably/significantly different from the stock GTI ?
s9omer
Thanks for the info. The problem seems to be intermittent, although the revs are always high on a cold start, the flapping noise not always appears. Sorry to be brief on the noise but thats what it sounds like... rsclzcd, I will give that a try next time. The service is due soon so I will get this checked out and keep you guys updated on what they say. Cheers.
stooH
Looking at the post it's a 25th anniversary car he's got so it's likely to sound slightly different from you 2 litre turbo'd milltek beast...
Snoopy
Its escapes me the exact name of it at the moment but on most VWs theres a gas recirculating canister that makes a dunk dunk dunk noise if the cars left to idle for a bit. Its very noticeable on some models and not on others.
