I'm thinking of buying an Xbox 360 as an extension to my Vista Media Centre PC. The Xbox will be for the bedroom.

I've heard that these can be quite noisy in operation, is that true?

If they are I may install the unit in the loft above the bedroom and drop the wires down the wall to the TV. Does anyone know if the wireless controllers will work through plasterboard?

The optical drive is the loudest part I found when I had mine, but even playing Live Arcade content the fans were a little too loud for my taste.

The wireless controller worked from another room in my house if I remember correctly, so it should be fine. Not sure of range though.

Its noisy. Very noisy.

Mine sits below the TV, on top of the Sky box, about 8ft away from where I sit when using it - and it is very easily heard whirring away.

You can still hear it with a decent amount of volume on too, although TBH its something you just get used to. The noise I hear above it now is that of me getting shot 47 times in an hour on Call of Duty 3 (although I should point out my number of kills now outnumbers my number of deaths almost every time I play. So I'm chuffed and don't care).

I finished 8th out of 24 in a recent War. I want a medal for that.

However, I should also point out that if Panzer shells had killed as few ground troops in reality as they do on COD3 that WWII would have been over much more quickly. The tank driving is great, but my god they've underestimated the destructive power of the shells - and it spoils it a bit.

It works from two floors up in out house, plasterboard will be no problem.

If you have it in the loft though how will you change games or press the button on the front when it loses the connection to your controllers.

Also if you put it in the loft will it get dusty and will it get hot in the summer?

MrMe, i'd move that PDQ.

Like a PC, the 360 is VERY temperature sensitive. Im guessing its in a cabinet, which is a nono, but putting it on a sky box is even worse. The sky box will be warm, and the 360 draws air in through the bottom and the right hand side (when lying down), both of these will be warm in your scenario, so you have a nice little timebomb going there.

At very least it'll be contributing to the fan noise as the fans are temperature controlled.

MrMe - I would also suggest you move it to be honest. Stood up on it's side with maximum airflow around it is best IMO. Sky+ (I presume) boxes get red hot, I've just moved mine into a cabinet and I've had to install some 12v fans to dissipate some of the heat that it generates on it's own.

Daz - why not just buy a DLNA box for the bedroom if all you want it for is media?

I don't think it's excessively loud when in use unless you're playing a game. As JT says the optical drive is pretty loud.

Daz

As stated above, it is only really noisey when there is a DVD in the drive.

The 360 when only on the dashboard isn't really any louder than your average PC (notice I said average)

MrMe,

With all respect to shark_90 I wouldn't put the 360 on it's side.

I know of at least 5 people that have done this and trashed one of thier games. The DVD drive isn't the most forgiving when ejecting a game and if it hasn't spun down it will score the disc making it unusable.

Funny you should mention that Mick. PGR3 won't play as the disc is scored, I found out last night blush.gifsmashfreakB.gif

Streaming viewable content from t'internet....

even Sky has woken up to the "competition" of use of torrents t access content which would explain why, for example, there used to be a lag of up to some weeks between an episode of "Lost" being available on torrents and it being on Sky. Now it is a day.

I've checked my Sky HD box anyway and it doesn't get that hot even when on, compared with the XBox anyway, that creates loads of heat, the difference to it is probably minimal. I keep the cabinet doors open while I'm using it to make sure there is plenty of air circulation.

You could always stand it on something to create an air gap if you're bothered, it doesn't sound like you are though.
