A question about keys

For reasons known only to the gods i only have one flip out key thingy .. for backup i'd like another.

Is it better for me to get one of those blank key/door open close blippers from ebay then find somewhere in leicestershire to cut the key ... then pair it to the car and get the dealers to code the cars imobiliser to it .. or bite the bullet and just order a brand new one that'll be coded ready to go then keep the old one as the spare.

does anyone have an idea of the cost of a new key/coding etc

thanks guys

I have a key that is not compatiable with my A8. It's for A6/S6/TT 2000 onwards. I purchased it from ebay. I now have another key on its way with the correct number to my car. Programming can be done via vag-com. Or York Audi quoted me half hour labour to program the key for me. But they wont/cant cut blades and will tell you o order one from Germany HQ!

I got my blade cut at a key cutting van parked up in Tesco's at York! £5! However, I did go to a few places and they wouldn't cut it incase the blade broke and they wouldn't be held responsible, despite me saying i can get more blades! So think its a case of asking around until you find someone confindent enough to cut the blade.

There 'may be' someone on ebay (IIRC) who can cut your new blade as long as you post him a good clear pcture of your current blade! not sure HOW he does it but maybe worth thinking and searching for.

Thanks for all the replies guys .. i phoned the local (Leicester) dealer and roughly £150 mate was the reply (i don't know why but i had it in my head that it'd be a lot more)... so once the V5 comes back in my name i'll be off to sample the delights of my first Audi dealership
