Manifold Problems

For a week or so now, When driving normally, with window down, i can hear whats sounds like turbo boost leak. With the engine on tick over parked up, my head next the O/S/F wheel i can hear it too! Put my fot down, past 4500rpm then i get ths really 'RAASPY' noise.

To me i think its the manifold leaking exhaust gasses. Or a hairline crack as the noise does get quieter as the exhaust heats up.

Is this a common fault or am i just unlucky? Only had car 4 weeks and already got an oil leak on the gearbox to fix!

Going to strip out air box later today (if i get chance to) and start engine to look/feel/listen wherer the 'leak' is coming from.

More likely to be a leak on a boost pipe leading between turbo and intercooler. If it was the manifold it's unlikely you'd hear it at idle when there is no boost present. Unless it was very bad, then you would here it sucking in at idle. You can spray some easy start in the manifold area while it's running, if it's sucking in the revs will rise when you hit the point with the leak.

Slightly confused though as you seem to have had an S4 which is sold but now have an A8 which if it's got a turbo would be really interesting!grin.gif

Good luck.

I'd love a turbo'd A8 169144-ok.gif, but wouldn't be able to afford the conversion!

But once had a leak on S4 and this sounds similar on the A8. Very raspy when cold. I didn't have chance yesterday so i might try and look today!

Forced induction is the way to go with big engine v8s. Puts less pressure on the engine. It would indeed be interesting to see the sort of performance a super charged 4.2 v8 A8 would turn out.

I looked into it for the 4.2 v8 engine on my Maserati 4200. Place in Germany does kits, they run to around £14,000 fitted on the Maserati, assume it would be similar amount of money for an A8....

Its claimed that the super charger conversion on the 4200 takes it up from 400 - 550 bhp +

Thats a 37.5% increase. On a 360bhp S8 that would give 495 bhp. Have to get it delimited, could the brakes, transmission, suspension and chasis take such a huge power increase given the size and weight of the car ?

Be very interesting to find out ! Sorry bit off topic, Friday day dreaming....

I'll add to the dream theme as I am considering a PES supercharger system for my V6 (as fitted to many 30v 2.8 A4, A6's)costs around £2000 and horses go up to 285hp; so I can keep up or even take most of your V8's; remeber V6 is lighter ECLIPSe.gif

I'm trying to pin this expense against the cost of a facelift S8... we shall see wink.gif

Good luck. People talk about picking up decent face lift d2 s8s like its easy. They are very rare cars, and good ones almost impossible to find now.

I have been looking for an an 02 d2 final for a year now. I have all but given up on finding a low mileage car with the right colour combination I want.

I keep looking, but in the mean time I have had the alloys reworked, rear bumper resprayed and getting craig to retro fit widscreen sat nav + freeview tv in motion on my 3.7 d2 02.

Keep me happy for the time being, maybe wait for the d3 s8 sub £30,000 in the next year or so.....

On a side note, long term I am very worried about the future of the A8 moving forward. The depreciation seems to go from bad to ridiculous - £70,000 new d3 03 with less than 40,0000 miles strugling to sell for £20,000. I got offered under £9000 trade in recently for my car. Its just over 4 years old with 40,000 miles on the clock. Cost new £57,000.

How is that going to continue ? Are finance compaines and private buyers going to carrying on buying cars that lose three quarters of their value in 3 years however good they are ?

I hope so but its worrying....I hope the A8 dosnt go the way of the A2, they must be losing money big on the A8, maybe vw will just go with the Phantom and have one loss leading top end motor ?

its one of the reasons i love my S8 i know when the the car was new it cost a small fortune i have never bought a car brand new even my wifes corsa i waited for a car around 10 months old so the price had dropped quite a lot.I know i will never be able to afford an audi S8 brand new so im chuffed to bits the prices drop like a stone its brings what is a fabulous super saloon to the layman.if MDs and the wealthy want to pay 70k for a car knowing that 2 years down the road its worth 30k more fool them. slap.gif
