PS3 .. so is it going to be a slow burn ?

Had a few e-mails saying that if you pre-order now its guaranteed for delivery on launch date. The Xbox360 and Wii were sold out for months.

So is it too expensive or not then ? I'm not getting one for a while if at all going to see what happens. PC and Wii are serving me well at the moment.

If I was Sony I might be worried but as the title suggests I think they are hoping on the long term. blush.gifsmirk.gif

As most people in the games industry will tell you, it comes down to the games at the end of the day. Right now there is nothing I want to play desperately on the PS3 and nothing in the forseeable future, with the exception of Mercenaries 2 which is confirmed as being multi-platform. Meanwhile there are already several XBox360 games that I have played which I want the chance to tackle and I really want HALO3. The second wave of PS3 software seems to be relying on Sony's big brand titles Gran Turismo and Metal Gear, both of which lost my custom last gen through complacent design. Lair is the only PS3 title that looks to be both something fresh while still being 'next-gen'. All things considered, and I was an early taker for the PS2 mind you, Sony are definitely on the slow burn track regardless of what they think of it.

Don't forget CarMad, that Sony admitted they'd screwed up in launching in the USA and that they'd make sure we'd have plenty of consoles for the UK.

I got an email from Amazon today saying mine is guaranteed, but a friend who ordered on the same day still hasn't had the same email, but one saying it could be 4-6 weeks later than anticipated.

I think it's a combination of Sony having time to build more units, a case of the 360 being good enough to offer games that are tempting people to that format, and the release of the Wii, plus the PS3 price of course.

I personally don't find £425 expensive for the PS3, knowing how much value my £250 PS2 has given me over the last 4 years. Games are still at £40 which is good too.

From reports im reading, there are huge numbers of PS3s coming to the UK, purely because Sony want to make the money, rather than ebay profiteers.

The PS3 will sell loads to people who want HD Movies, it will sell loads to people who are diehard playstation fans, it'll sell loads to gadget freaks. It'll sell loads to people who havn't got a 360.

It will be very interesting to see the sales figures at xmas, and just see what margins between all 3 consoles. As Sparky has said several times, at the moment theres no need for both 360 and PS3 and it will be interesting to watch the exclusives that start coming out for both consoles, and see how they push the respective consoles.

This is the key to the PS3's success.. i'm a gamer, but at the moment i see no reason to buy one. Blue-ray doesn't appeal to me.. i'm not going to replace my entire DVD collection because of this, and to be honest, if i was i would buy a dedicated blue-ray machine.. not a playstation.

The only reason i will buy one now, is if a new generation of games come out, dedicated to the PS3, that makes it a must buy.

Is it true the PS3 price has been dropped for the UK market, and thats been done by removing the compatibility hardware to run PS2 games?

[/ QUOTE ]

Not quite.

The price hasn't dropped, but the cost of producing the machine has. The price was dropped in Japan, but not down to changes in the hardware. I doubt we'll see a price drop until nearer Christmas, which is also when the PS3 20GB version is due out.

Some games have been removed from the compatibility list. There are still a fair number that will work. There was a dedicated chip handling the emulation of the PS2 - it's now being done via software so they can released updates for old games as time goes on. Sony said they will work towards getting every game to operate where possible.

I still think Sony have lost a huge amount of ground to MS now.

I'll stick with my 360 anyway, because I'm not serious enough about gaming to want something that is potentially the same, marginally better or even a fair bit better.

I'll wait a couple of years and if it turns out to be MUCH better, then maybe I'll pick one up for £150 by then.

Played a PS3 for the first time yesterday. Only two games, Blazing Angels (WW2 dogfights) and Need for Speed Carbon. BA was amusing enough while NFS was, well NFS, I don't like it. Both were distinctly ordinary, nothing special, indeed NFS manages to be a great leveller of consoles through its consistent cross-platform mediocrity. Both could easily have been PS2 titles from their design, BA in particular limits you in the area you can fly (and its not much) and while the buildings of London are rendered in 3D on the ground, other maps are bland (A European theatre map had a few trees dotted around a valley and a bridge, in lesser resolution and polygon count a PS1 could have run it).

Additionally the graphics were rough, forget the PS2 launch and the great anti-aliasing debate, there were serious jagged edges to just about every moving object in NFS and BA. Because of this my advice would be not to even consider a PS3 unless you can afford a HD TV to play it on.

I'll hopefully get a chance to try alternative launch titles, will keep you posted.

Well I have to say its good that Sony does have enough to ensure that the demand for the console is met. I'm just not sure how much demand there is as others have mentioned.

Its a great piece of kit but is a much harder sell to the bedroom than an Wii or Xbox... £400 isn't an impulse purchase however good it is in overall value.

Mind you when GT is released I might be beating down the door to get one. grin.gif169144-ok.gif
