steelwind101
I keep even mild steel exhausts in shape with Einszett metal polish. If you use it often it will clean up over time if you dont want to sit out an entire session!! I did once wet sand the pipe then use Eniszett to bring it out the shine!! Basically the metal polishes just make it cleaner and shiner every time you use them. When mine get bad i use stockinette then switch to MF for the final few applications. steelwind101
Hi, Sorry i was just reading everyone elses posts!! Hmm, ok i looked at the pic are they pretty chipped up (the sand coloured parts)?? The blue coloured parts might never come out, i wonder if its something acidic that has hit the car and caused the damage?? If wet sanding wotn budge it then i dont know what will. Where did u get it fitted or are u under warrenty?? I Dont think they will replace them unless its corroded by accident, ie: they were not sealed or manufac. properly. kp090
thing is i bought the car from bmw on saturday... wen i was at the garage getting the car i noticed the pipes but jus thought it was dirty water that had dried on.. then 2day i thought wash the car and shine the pipes up but it didnt shift thats wen i got worried.... yea it does seem like something has been spilt onto them. if i bought the car like this surely they would replace them? what is wet sanding? yep ive got the 1year bmw approved used car warranty

steelwind101
KP, Take it back to the dealer, they will probably have a 10 exchange or something warrenty?? They will probably just replace them for you. It looks to me like it might have been cleaned with something like wheel cleaner that has and has damaged and tainted the metal. Wet sanding is a process of using different roughness sand papers to remove the stain and remove the current surface of the pipe. I think your best of going back!! kp090
steelwind... rang bmw up 2day... they goes coz the car is 4years old nothing can be perfect and there isnt much they can do( this is what the salesperson who was dealing with me said)... however they said write a letter to the head of the garage and see what he says... its so obvious they will say the same thing!!! thing is wirewool gets rid of anything... in this case its scratching the pipes.. so does this mean the top layer has been removed if the wool is sratching it? im using proper fine wire wool aswell... i have no idea what to do coz im definately not paying for new pipes wen i jus spent 25k on the car! steelwind101
KP Are the sand coloured "chips" acutally chips that have gone through the shiney finish?? If the answer is yes then it looks like those stains are JUST AS DEEP which means they are not going to come out. ITs quiet likley someone used soemthing like acidic wheel cleaner (AG CLEAN WHEELS) to clean them and damaged the coating. As mentioned before, go back the dealer and they will either sort it out for you or you will have to but a new tail pipes. Give WD 40 a shot too. IMHO if wirewool and a tough metal polish isnt removing it then anything short of a magic wand isnt going to help. Geoff
steelwind101
Sorry, i for some reason i must have been viewing a cached version of the page. Um, if the wool is removing the top layer but the stains are there it means the stains have gone really deep. Wet sanding might be more effective. kp090
when im using the wirewool all it really is doing is jus scratching the surface of the pipes leaving alot of scracth marks all over it... not getting rid of the stains at all.. the scratches make it look even worse now.... thats wot im thinking too.. sum acidic cleaner on it.. IDIOTS!!! ive used metal polis and no result... on my s3 wirewool and metal polish would get the pipes spanking new! wirewool and metal on m3.. no result all. ill have to write a letter to bmw and see what happens.. personally i think spending soo much on a car ud expect to get a bit of good aftersales service! its poo! steelwind101
Yeah you would expect them to atleast try and clean them yourself. If your finish is tarnished by the wirewool then try just metal polish it should "revive" the finish and bring back the shine. Someone else where mentioned Wenol which i think is acutally a metal cleaner, i havent used it myself. Maybe someone can chip in?? That might have some effect.
