[Audi A3/S3] A3 Armrest DIY disaster!

Hello all,

I have seen some posts on diy armrests but I need quite specific help. I purchased an armrest from vagparts for my 1998 a3 but immediately realised I had a problem.

Please see attached picture, and instructions I followed from http://www.vagparts.com/pages/Armrest.htm

I have successfully removed the console and tried to attach the bracket that will hold the armrest. However I realised that if I screw the bracket it will not be level with the floor. Please see picture - holes 1 and 2 are on same level. However hole 3 is not level and is significantly lower than holes 1 and 2. Therefore if I attach the bracket in that position, the armrest will be at an angle. Surely this can not be right, and I know I have the correct bracket, because the bracket correctly covers the 3 holes from an ariel view - has anyone else had similar problems?

Also, the bracket came with screws and nut, and I have no idea how one can get there hands on the underside of the holes and attach the nuts to bolt the bracket to the floor of the car (numbers 1, 2 and 3).

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is my first diy job and I am looking to update my project with pictures to show everyone it can be done - but need help first!

Thanks

hanga17,

Don't worry, you're just missing an adaptor piece (it's item 14a in the diagram posted above).

The part number is 1J0 711 354. VagParts will be able to supply it, hopefully free of charge as it ought to be included in the kit really.

You simply remove the nut labelled '3' in your pic, and fit the adaptor in its place; then your armrest should fit. The same nut then screws into the top of the adaptor to secure the armrest.

Hope this helps.

Tim

Thanks guys for an amazing super fast reply. It is reassuring to know that I haven't gone mad, and I am now at least a little bit calmer knowing I haven't randomly destroyed my a3!!

I have emailed VagParts and will keep the post updated with my progress.

Cheers

Hi,

Glad that info helped.

About the other two fixings (1 and 2), you need two captive nuts (item 12 in the diagram) and two bolts (item 13).

Hopefully these are the ones that came with the armrest! They're quite hefty (M8 thread), and the bolts should have a bit of a shoulder on them I think.

The captive nuts slot in around the holes on the floor - they are a bit fiddly to fit iirc - then the bolts just will screw in nice and easy.

If you just have plain nuts and bolts then it's back to VagParts again I guess :-/

The part numbers are 903 019 01 (nuts) and 101 559 01 (bolts).

Hope it works out

Cheers

Tim

  • 3 weeks later...

Success!!

As promised I would update the forum on my progress! Thanks guys for the part numbers - worked a treat!

Please see pictures... now I have a funky armrest! The hardest part had to be cutting the plastic... it was so painful and tedious... had to use a chisel to meticulously cut a perfect rectangle... if you cut too much your screwed and messeg everything up!.. Anyways let me know what you chapos think..
