Tumbletop
I've been thinking about this for quite some time now, and posted a few questions along similar lines before. I'm all ready to begin modding away my mk4, and am going to get the ball rolling with a full Milltek system, manifold, cats and cat-back. But, do I or don't I get the resonated one or not? Ready a few peoples reports from threads on here, and I yo yo from "yes get the noisier version!" to "no be sensible, think of the neighbours!". I was fortunate enough to hear someone else's R with the cat-back resonated exhaust, and was surprised just how quiet it was. I'd go as far as to say it was possibly slightly quieter on tickover than a standard one, and marginally noisier at full throttle (although a much nicer sound). However, I understand that adding cats increases the volume, and adding the manifold will increase it again. I've also heard that changing the cam can make it louder still, and this is possibly something I'd consider upgrading in the future. I believe Dan is running this system non-resonated and likes it, yet someone else (Mook maybe?) had to change to the resonated due to it being too noisy. I tend to do a lot of late (gone midnight) returns to my house, which at the end of a little street in a quiet neighbourhood. So, I'm all for the quieter version. BUT... I'll be dissapointed if the system isn't noticably louder than the stock system when your "pressing on". Then again, I do a good deal of motorway milage and a droning pipe would be a definate no no. I realise its not a big job to change from one to the other once I've got one, but I'd like to avoid the hassle (and expense) of changing. Any tips to save me ordering the wrong one please? Cheers! mlhj83
IMHO, the full milltek resonated system for the MK4 is plenty loud enough. Have you heard the MK4 with full milltek resonated system on the milltek website? It's bloody loud enough I think. Just my 2 cents worth.

I just want other people to tell me the full system is plenty loud enough really to set my mind at rest I actually find it difficult to tell how loud an exhaust is from online material. Dan32
When I get over my man/bird flu, perhaps we could arrange a mini meet somewhere in the middle (I'm close to Brighton) and you can hear my car. Might be able to convince Jimmyp to join us so you can hear his without the manifolds. His, by the way, was louder than mine most of the time until I got the manifolds and even now, there are moments when his has deeper growl to it. Must be as they are almost handmade that some will be louder than others.
Rocket_Man
I've got the Hi-Flo cats/cams/CAI fitted to mine. I started out with the resonated version but found I wanted more sound (in the car). I ended up getting a non-silenced section to try out. This was great for "fun runs" but when your tired and just driving to get where your going the loud boom that starts at 2-2.2k is not good. Yes you can keep the car pretty quiet if your change at 2k but on the motorway sat in 6th when the traffic is up and down between 50-70 there is a constant droan. (By about 85 it goes quiet again) After about a month I went back to resonated. I was having a bad week and when the second boy racer tried to push me (this has never happened in the same way while resonated) because my exhaust was making it sound like I was trying (when really I was in 6th just accelerating slowly) I decided enough was enough. I still miss the pops on the overrun and the extra sound when playing. I've even been thinking about swapping back, I have the non-silenced section in shed and can swap them over using axle stands in about an hour. What I'm saying is, neither is perfect for me, but too much noise spoilt my enjoyment on normal runs. Its been said before, but if you use your car only for fun, get the non silenced, if you use it every day go for resonated and put the windows down for extra sound

[/ QUOTE ]Yes I'd like that Dan - I almost turned up unannounced on your recent meet down to Portchester but was on call with work in the end so didn't chance the phone going off. Have you guys got any plans to meet up again in the near future? Rocketman - I didn't realise this was something that was easy as that to change! Perhaps I will get the resonated then possibly buy the extra pipe at a later date then

Gti_Fly
many moons ago when my car was standard, I was taken for drive in AMD's R32 which had straight through millteks. OMG was it loud and boomy! I immediately went for the silenced version, and have been happy ever since. It is quieter than stock at idle, but definatly sportier sounding (NOT louder) than stock. However, as the miles rack up (i've now done approx 45-50k miles on my milltek), the exhaust gets boomier and louder with age. We recently took off a milltek from my friends R32 (as he was selling the car), and fitted a brand new vw stock exhaust. We were both amazed at how quiet sounding, and non-boomy the stock exhaust sounded! Just goes to show, that with age the exhuasts get louder and louder. I recently heard a couple of non-silenced millteks at a rolling road day, and I do think they are too loud for my tastes. The milltek silenced is loud enough as it is

Tumbletop
OK thanks for all the advise guys. Today I ordered a full resonated system, fitting will be in two weeks in time for the GTI Spring Festival
Tumbletop
To report - had the full resonated system fitted yesterday at Big Boys Toys (brilliant place, fantastic people!), and had an AmD remap put on as well as a Pipercross panel filter. One word - LOUD. Who on earth has the non-resonated one lol their cars must be just plain rude! Drove back through Harlow (deepest Essex boy land) and blipped the throttle, and had everyone on the pavement (and surrounding cars) turn around the stare! Nice thing is on tickover or "gentle" acceleration its fine, its only when you bury the throttle that it sounds like some sort of exotica making some rapid progress. Thanks for people's recommendation to go for the resonated version!
Rocket_Man
When it's settled it (about 1000 miles) it'll be quieter (les boomy)
jimmyp
I have the the full non resonated system, i started with the resonated but it was just to quiet, they are only loud when pushed hard so you can drive the .:R in quiet mode see how you get on, after some time you may want the non resonated pipe being fitted
