carlo_uk
Stayed at my girlfriends parents overnight and woke up this morning to find their mk5 tdi had been stolen. Looks like they were after my Mk5 R32 but couldn't find the keys. B**tards!!!

carlo_uk
They used the old hook and cane technique through the cat flap to get the key and open the door to the house. They then rifled through my missus's mum's handbag and got the keys to the car. Same trick only 6 months back a few doors down with a pals X5. At least it wasn't my motor. This was in Preston, Lancs by the way

Craigieboy
Quite worrying how often keys are taken from the house like this. Its been said before though, but Don't leave keys within eyesight/reach of any windows or doors, its just tempting fate to give scum an easy target like that. [/ QUOTE ] So hide the keys, and get the feckers to come in armed and take them by force? If they want the car they will come inside for the keys, ask Will22 and Ins John, both recent victims. I will continue to leave my keys on the dresser, in the morning room in plain sight. If they get in, don't wake us and want a metal box then they are more than welcome. Holding a knife or gun to my wife or my children's head to extort the location of a hidden key is plain daft and courting anger / assault issues. It's a metal box, it's insured and they would be allowed by me to make there escape without menace or injury to the family

SJB
Due to the efficiency of most modern immobiliser systems possesion of the keys is now almost a neccesity, hence the increase in this (hook/cane) and unfortunately more aggressive and direct attempts. Gone are the days when someone could lift your car quietly from the drive without disturbing you. Now they will come 'knocking at the door' or worse for the keys. Mine (04 plate 5dr) was forcibly taken off the driveway by three men all wearing black jeans/Sweaters/balaclava's. Two surrounded and restrained my partner while the third demanded the keys from me, needless to say they were given the keys and departed. Carlouk, I offer my sympathies to your inlaws and hope the insurance arrange a replacement asap. Chris5, Like you my keys are in the kitchen if anybody needs them, although these guys were a bit impatient and didn't give us time to get into the house let alone settle down to sleep! Cheers, Simon.
Simonl
[ QUOTE ] So hide the keys, and get the feckers to come in armed and take them by force? [/ QUOTE ] Not always the case mate, theives that do the old rod technique are more than likely opportunists going from house to house to see what they can get. Stuff nicked to order is a different matter tho (like you say) I leave my keys out of sight from the front door (cause that's just plain dumb), but easy to find for anyone wishing to go to any measure to take them. Ritey
Simple solution, get a mini, give them the keys but let them work out that the car is missing a dissie arm and has a race cut off switch wired in, thats always off when parked In all seriousness though, feel for the guys/gals/families that have been put through this, quite sickining I'm sure

That way, instead of getting a trashed car back and losing a load of money, you get your money back and buy another. That's my thoughts on it, anyway. [/ QUOTE ] I'm glad you took my post as it was meant. A choice between car or family saftey is no choice at all. All I was trying to say is that I never leave my keys within reach or sight of doors/windows, but easily enough to notice if they did break into the house. The rod and hook grabbers are just out for an easy target, can't see the keys = move on and you'll wake up with your car still there The ones who are out to take the car by breaking in/force, thats a whole different level of scum. BrakeSnake
I asked a police mate of mine about reasonable force... basically if the 's get into your house, and they're posing a threat, hit the bastards as hard as you can, just dont hit them again when the are on the deck... I wouldn't hesitate clobbering the shite with my 7 iron which is by my bed...
Craigieboy
It used to be said that if you had just the one club by your bed then you can get done by the police for that as it's being 'stored' as a weapon, but if you have the full golf bag by the bed then thats fine. I'd also suggest the 3 iron, more distance.

packa
Joking apart guy's. But if you attack any one trying to nick your car its not classed as a good move by the Rozzer's! I have the chief of west yorks live (Near my street) Did i just say that?It wouldn't make a differance if queen lived next door? Stick with hook are drive by's. not full on towkers. CCTV is good. Or put the thing in the garage!! My two scoobies sat on quite surb drive used to get targeted once a fortnight Me in one(.22 pistol) two german shepards in 5 sportswagon. cost me £200 in locks when i fell asleep setting up cctv( Note try not to do alcohol when setting up cctv????_) Anyway after i bought .:R. With in one week i had corsa with dustbin lid for a silencer looking at houses for sale????? So i emptied garage once again so the .:R. Would be nice and sqaushed in integral??? only had a walk in once never a break in so i think we are lucky? Got two Dobermanns now though they make a lot more noise which can be a bad thing sometimes?????? Catch em, boot em, east coast em????? High tide 03.00 at the mo??? jaydash
Saying that you'd batter someone is all-well-and-good, but frankly the pro's who'll break-in would probably come in pairs or trio's, wearing balaclavas etc. Sadly, unless you are some kind of nutter Begby character, it would probably be a bit frightening to actually come across them in the middle of the night(thereby denting any man's pride if he can't defend his own castle etc). We have an off-road parking area behind our House which was full of rubbish and sheds until recently, but has now been tidied and tarmacced. Does anyone think that a couple of metal posts would deter even the latter category of thief? (provided the key to them is kept seperate to the car keys, just in case they get in). I remember seeing a magazine test that had these £200 posts standing up to hammering for a good 5 mins, enough to alert you/ neighbours etc. Just wonder if that will be enough to stop these people even bothering? PS. I used to have the best deterrent a few years back, (given that they say a big dog is worth two men)... THREE healthy Bullmastiff dogs that used to lay in front of the glass-panelled front door!
