skifly
We are talking backup software as everyone must have a backup solution... Was just after opinions on decent backup software that i could use to backup items from my 3 pc's onto a NAS drive. One thing i would want it to be able to do is to keep my music (and pics folder) in synch between my destop PC (constantly adding music) and the NAS as it is a DLNA certified one for the likes of itunes streaming so would want it to be able to simply add the new stuff every few days from my desktop. Other than that i guess its main use would be to take a perfect backup of the windows partition on the computers. Any ideas what would be best to do this as the NAS doesnt come with any software. nordberg
I'm old fashioned, but I would recommend using robocopy.exe located on the Windows Resource Kit. I've used all sorts of third party stuff in the past, but this still kicks ass!
techieboy
Or the freebie Microsoft SyncToy might be just the ticket. Supports over the lan copying using UNC paths, etc.

skifly
well this is very boring - ended up realising that Sync copy was going to take too long so changed tack and am now uploading everything to it via ftp (supposed to be quicker). Does anyone know how long this will take as it has been running most days for 12 hours plus since the weekend and still has loads to go. I have about 100 gig to get onto it and only have 40 gone on so far since sat morning. Is this normal as it appears that i am getting arounc the 50-70kb/s transfer rate at the moment over a normal crossover cable with forced 100meg on the network adapter. Anything else i can try to speed this up as would hate to do a proper backup onto it!!
techieboy
Christ. How are you connected to the NAS? I'd have said a couple of hours if you're connected via Cat5 Ethernet. Are you copying over WiFi as that will be slow. FTP may be a bit quicker but it will depend on what kind of files your copying and whether they can be compressed during transport. Remember, the first sync is the most painful one. After the intial copy only changed/new files will be copied across.
skifly
straight cat5 crossover cable into a 100 meg card. The NAS is a Buffalo Linkstation Live. Why - should i be getting more than about 70kb/s?
skifly
oh feck!!! just dropped back to full autonegotiation and get 5600kb/s now. AH bollox...!! Just wasted loads of time last weekend, plus the comp has been on all week!!
