Gearbox light on dash....

driving to the fire station tonight, stopped behind a parked car to let an oncoming vehicle past. Put my foot down, shot past the car and returned to casual driving. Turned right into the fire station and on the dash where you have PRND432, this was ALL illuminated red! the car appeared to be stuck in 3rd or 4th gear. Turned off car and restarted and everything appears back to normal! since then, I've not put my foot down again incase i do some serious damage!

Anyone else had this problem before?

Hi,

Thats what happens when the gearbox goes into "safemode" when it detects a problem somewhere.

The fact that you turned the car off and it has now gone, leads me to believe that your are a lucky man and it "may" just have been a spurious electrical gremlin from one of the numerous senors in the car.

If it isn't "highlighted" then its not in "safemode" and to continue driving is perfectly ok. If it returns to "safemode" and stays there, then its time to VAG-COM or dealer and it could get expensive...

Bye for now

Cheers for the good reply, I'll get my vag-com on it later. I do currently have a gearbox oil leak (i think its that messy under there!) and at end of month its going in to a local audi specialist for filter/oil change plus cambelt.

Also, it hunts a little. slightly worse now than when i bought it. So at the moment I'm not using the car unless im repsonding to my fire alerter but driving very steadily getting there!

Couldnt it be related to the leak? e.g. the box has detected the level is too low or has an associated problem.

Quite possible imo, I dont think there is actually a sensor to read gearbox oil level, but, referring to his original post about putting his foot down and now that he says there is a leak AND that it hunts more now than when he bought it, I would assume that the oil level is "probably" to low and during the little rapid acceleration the oil in the box would have all moved re-wards away from possibly where it needs to be and that in itself "may" have caused the lock up into safe mode.

If you want my Honest opinion, Fix the box leak ASAP to AVOID any further damage and do a FULL fluid / filter change on the gearbox. If you want a write up on it, to do it your self, look here

  • 2 weeks later...

Right, just got car back from the garage. initially, it was an inspection for the oil leak, g/box top-up if required and fault diagnose on the box.

Came back that the oil leak is engine oil, possibly from cam/crank shaft seals (front and rear leak) plus the engine is still overfull of oil! I have'nt topped the oil up on the car and it was leaking oil when bought it, so previous owner may of topped up too much, blowing some seals.

As for g/box, oil level was full! still having hunting problems and the very occasional thud and occasional slipping. Car is booked in on Wed for an overnight oil and filter change! So hopefully, this will resolve my issues.

Just need to get the cambelt and oil leak done next! Then MOT, then TAX and THEN i can start to mod my car to my likings. Retro-fit here and there! 169144-ok.gif

I'm not sure how well it would work. The engine and gearbox communicate quite closely, and the gearbox would be expecting the engine to behave in a certain way during, say, a gearshift. If the revs and torque aren't what it is expecting you might end up with some messy shifts and ultimately a knackered 'box.

See how things are after the service - you might be pleasantly surprised. 169144-ok.gif

bit of a longshot, but fearing the worst for my gbox on thurs, how would an S8 gbox fair up on my engine? new or recond tho. Would it work the same or would the brains of the box need replacing too?

I suspect you'd need to replace the rear diff too...

If the engine is too full of oil, then it will get blown out of the engine at all weak(ish) points. Not necessarily problems with the engine itself.

Some cars burn the excess, some squeeze it out of seals.
